{Dads Day DIY} Easy Canvas Art

Let’s take a short break from the mustaches today, shall we? And by short break, I mean, we’ll be back to them tomorrow. But it’s the last one…promise! And it’s not so much a Dad’s Day gift, but a fun decor project. Involving mustaches. Trust me, it’s cute.

The best things about Mother’s and Father’s Day, are the precious drawings and sweet notes from the little ones. Dads have it easy because kids are in school over Mother’s Day…so the teachers take care of all that! With Father’s Day during the Summer, the kids and I were on our own to create something for Daddy.

Mr. Sugarplum loves the kid’s art, and most of it ends up taped to the walls of his office. So we decided to paint something sturdier that we could display at home.

Most of the time, the kids just paint whatever they want, but since we wanted to hang these together, we all stuck with a similar theme. I cut hearts out of contact paper, and sealed them on the center of a canvas.

Then they each covered the canvas with their own abstract art, using acrylic craft paint.

Once it was dry, we peeled the contact paper off to reveal clean hearts in the center.

We hung them in the Mudroom using Command strips.

Since it’s the back hall, leading to the garage, it’s the perfect spot to display the kid’s art. They add so much color and personality to the space, and Dad loves being greeted by them everyday!

On the other wall, we hung the giraffe art they created at this party. I love how it accidentally tied in with the green door.

Have you tried your hand at painting? I’m not artistic, so it felt uncomfortable. But I did enjoy watching the kids get creative. Are you getting crafty for Father’s Day this year?

See the Mudroom Makeover here. And how we easily and inexpensively hung the board and batten here.

  1. LOVE!! They are so sweet — the art AND the artistes. I'm Pinning this for future use (you know, when Quinn can actually keep the paint on the canvas rather than flinging it madly on to me).

Let's talk about your impressive acrylic paints collection!!!

Hi, What did you seal the contact paper on the contact paper with? Modge podge? I attempted this with my kids and the contact paper kept lifting. I'm having 31 kids on Sunday for a birthday party, this is their take home šŸ™‚

    • Hi Tara — I just peeled the back off the contact paper and stuck it directly to the canvas…it stayed put while they painted, then we peeled it off. Hope this helps…and good luck with your party!!! ox

I came across your idea via Pinterest and decided to use it for my daughter's rainbow themed 6th birthday party at Michael's Crafts. The party was today and there were 12 girls total. I prepped the canvases in advance with the contact paper hearts and wrapped them with craft aprons. We filled a paint pallet for each girl and everything was ready to go when they walked in. They first decorated white gift bags (large enough to hold the canvas) with their names, then moved over to the painting zone, put on their aprons and got to work. They wrapped the painting up within 20-30 minutes and then ate pizza, did photo booth style dress-up pictures, played games and danced for the remainder of the party. The paint dried by the time the 2 hours were up and 12 happy little girls walked out with creations of their own. There was some bleed under the contact paper of a few of them, but it really didn't take away from the final product. Some girls copied the idea exactly, others added their own flair. I loved that I was sending them home with something other than candy and junky party favors. This was a huge hit, and really not that costly in the end (coupons and sales helped)! Thank you for the inspiration!

  10. Hello I love this idea! I am planning a party end of the year fun night for my daughter. We are going to paint this picture. The contact paper where do I find it at? Is it only Michael's? Also is it called contact paper? Thank you!

    • Yes, clear or white contact paper is available at most craft stores!

That’s strange, I don’t recall having any problems with it? There was some bleeding under the paper, because it doesn’t stick enough to make a seal, but certainly enough to stay in place? We didn’t do anything special to secure it. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help with this!!!
