Work to Weekend

February 26, 2016

Cheers to Friday! What’s on your agenda for the weekend? We’ve got a soccer game and an organizing project to tackle, but that’s about it, and I’m thrilled with the lack of plans! We’re headed out of town for Spring Break, so maybe I’ll actually get a jump on the laundry/packing/planning that comes with getting a family of four on an airplane! Or maybe I’ll just binge Netflix. My money’s on Netflix.

I get a lot of requests for work-appropriate styles, so I’ve been trying to include them more often. Granted, my work environment is fairly casual, so some of them might still be too laid-back for you, but hopefully you can adapt them to fit your office.

These sassy shoes have quickly become my latest obsession (I picked them up for our trip to NYC last week)…I knew they were darling with the saucy tie on the back, but I was shocked by just how comfortable they are! And the thicker straps keep me from feeling too exposed this time of year.

So since I’ve been looking for opportunities to wear them, I created {Work to Weekend} styles around them, and my trusty white oxford.

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend
Blazer | White Oxford | Strappy Heels | Blush Handbag
Sunglasses in Rose Gold | Dark Jeans

I love the feeling I get when I put on a blazer…like I really mean business! #girlpower I seem to reach for it when I have a meeting where I want to be taken seriously, but I also love it paired with a white tee and booties.

Style Tip: Pearls or something blingy keep business attire from looking too masculine. I can still be a #girlboss without looking like a man! #girlsruleboysdrool

Pearl Cluster Necklace | Earrings

The heels look great peeking out of trousers, but I opted for dark-rinse jeans so I could cuff them and show the cute tie-back. We’re still another month or so away from being able to wear skirts again (without tights anyway), but they’ll definitely transition with the season. These are a great closed-toe version without the tie if that’s more your style

This classic bag is perfect for  carrying my laptop, and the soft pink shade adds a feminine touch. (It’s also a great Look for Less for this high-end bag!)

Now let’s switch it up for the weekend! The heels make it a great edgy {Date Night Style}, but you could easily swap them for booties for a more casual day look.

Style Tip: Statement earrings, a clutch, and heels easily transition day looks to night.

Do you have any saucy heels that make you feel empowered? Well, you should! And do blazers work #girlpower magic on you, too? Oh, and sidenote…my sweater was flipped up in the Weekend look, unbeknownst to me…it’s not, nor is it intended to be, a crop top.  #aintnobodygotabsforthat Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Look for Less

February 1, 2016

Happy February, friends! We had a freak heat-wave blow through this weekend, and it was a gorgeous 75-degrees everyday! Needless to say, we spent the better part of it outside, so that makes being back at a desk particularly hard today! I actually want the cold to return (Winter should be Winter!), but the warm days do have me excited for Spring. Hopefully not for a few more months though!

Today I’m excited to bring you a big ole Look for Less roundup! You guys have made it pretty clear you love these posts, and I’m more than happy to troll the internet looking for deals…so it’s a win-win for us both! It’s like a challenge to find lower-priced items that give the same impact as their higher-priced counterparts…and obviously I love a good challenge!

That doesn’t mean that I always endorse the lower priced item, but it’s good to know your options. In some instances it’s worth it to pay a little more…that’s when I stalk and wait for a good sale!

This latest installment is a doozy…Mr. SP and I were watching the strangest movie the other night (Birdman, have you seen it?!), and I wasn’t really feeling it, so I turned my attention to my laptop instead.

Sidenote: I goofed the placement of a few items because the Low version looked so much better than the High! But ain’t nobody got time for new graphics!

We’ll start with booties, because they are my shoe-obsession this season. I’m pretty hard on my shoes, so while I do invest a little more for good quality, I don’t completely splurge because I know they’ll only last me a few years anyway. And since I’m now addicted to my rain boots (these pink ones are $50 off!!), I’m intrigued by the shorter version I show below. Anyone have experience with them?

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less

Strappy Booties : High  //  Low
Low Ankle Bootie : High  //  Low
Low Ankle Bootie : High  //  Low
Short Rainboot : High  //  Low

Every woman should own at least one pair of leopard heels…they just make an outfit! Even if it’s a simple little black dress, leopard heels make it ‘wow’!

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Ankle Strap Sandals : High  //  Low
High-Heel Pumps : High  //  Low
Low-Heel Pumps : High  //  Low

Peacoats and trench coats are wardrobe staples and never go out of style…you know I love this peacoat…in fact I already own it it two colors (size up!). I’ve seen this low-option trench and it’s fabulous…I haven’t seen this one, but it’s an amazing price, too.

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Camel Peacoat : High  //  Low
Khaki Trench : High  //  Low

Trendy pieces are usually fairly easy to find Look for Less options, but the classics can be a little harder. These are all great options.
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Chambray Dress : High  //  Low
Tunic Blouse : High  //  Low
Pleated Leather Skirt : High  //  Low
Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Illusion Top Dress: High  //  Low
Halter Trapeze Dress:  High  //  Low

We’re headed to the snow for Spring Break, so I’ve still got cozy tops and sweaters on my mind. I just picked up the low-option cashmere sweater in both crew neck and v-neck, and love them!

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Funnel Neck Pullover : High  //  Low
Ivory Turtleneck : High  //  Low
Crewneck Cashmere Sweater : High  //  Low
Accessories are the easiest way to change up an outfit, and also another area I prefer not to splurge! Lucky for my penny-pinching ways, there are always plenty of Look for Less options! I actually own every single one of these low-options. #sorrynotsorry

Hi Sugarplum | Look for Less
Crystal Collar : High  //  Low
Horn Pendant : High  //  Low
Pearl Cluster : High  //  Low
Bar Pendant : High  //  Low

And this isn’t really a Look for Less, but such a great sale it’s worth mentioning…we’re headed to the snow next month, and I don’t think my peacoat is going to cut it, so I’ve been scoping out this huge selection of Winter parkas for up to 60% off! What do you Northern girls think…see any winners? Mr. SP keeps telling me it’s about being warm, not a fashion show. But obviously he’s wrong…it’s both! 😉

What’s your favorite Look for Less this go-round? Have you spotted any good ones lately? Send them my way so I can share with the class. See more posts in this series here or clicking on this graphic in the sidebar. Happy Monday, love bugs!

P.S….My darling friend Shay, is releasing not one, but two, great cookbooks today! #canyoueven I’m just so so excited and proud of her! To celebrate, several of us are hosting a fab giveaway on Instagram. So hop over a little later today (no posting before coffee!), and enter to win 1 of 10 sets of books, plus a stand-up mixer!! #icanteven

{Best of 2015} Style Series

December 30, 2015

Well, North Texas is having a seasonal crisis….we went from sunny and 75 Christmas day, to horrific rains and tornadoes, and now it’s freezing with snow!? No wonder I’m coughing my fool-head off! I hoped to take the kids to the movie today, but I’m afraid someone might try to smother me just to make the coughing stop. Guess I’m forced to stay home in this snuggly wrap. #twistmyarm

Fashion has been a big part of this blog from the very beginning…in fact, I had an {Outfit Inspiration} post in my first week of blogging…but I beg you not to go back and look at it! Let’s just say I’ve learned a little in the past almost-six years!

I’m equally passionate about design and fashion, but the number of style posts have grown over the years as my interests evolved, and time restraints grew. Let’s face it, it’s a lot easier, quicker, and less expensive to get dressed, than to make over an entire room, or DIY a project!

More new style series have popped up over the years as I prefer my fashion posts to be helpful, as well as inspirational. Here’s a round-up of many of those from 2015…click the link under each image for all the posts in that category.

Good style doesn’t have to cost a fortune, so I scour the internet to find less expensive options for many of the current high-end trends.

{Look-for-Less}

Models on retailer’s websites and catalogs don’t really give a true depiction of an item, so I started trying on and sharing my top picks from my favorite stores…giving honest reviews and opinions, along with sizing tips and options for styling. With an occasional sidekick photobomb.
{Dressing Room Diaries}
This monthly series has been going strong for a couple of years, with quick snaps of my everyday outfits I share on Facebook and Instagram using #SugarplumStyle.
{Sugarplum Style}
I rarely, if ever, buy something for a specific event, with no plans of ever wearing it again. In order for something to come home with me, it needs to play double and triple duty…at least! This series shows how I make items work for both Day and Night.
{Day to Night}
It’s not always easy, but Mr. SP and I try to get out for occasional Date Nights…some fancy, but mostly casual. I’ve been sharing these posts for a few years, with our son behind the camera, but this year we ventured out with a professional photographer on occasion. It became a fun part of our Date Nights, and gave us a chance to share more of our city under the Big D and Dallas Eats categories.
{Date Night Styles}
{Family Dates}
In effort to stretch my closet even further, I love making many items work for multiple seasons.
{Now & Later}

Same is true for making clothes adapt for both work and casual weekends. Many of you have asked for more work-appropriate fashion, so I’m planning more of these in the new year.

{Work to Weekend}
Building a stylish outfit every time is simple when you follow this basic Rule of Three principle.
{The Rule of Three}

The goal isn’t to have more clothes, but to create more options with the items you do have! And when you do shop, to add items that stretch your wardrobe even further! Do you enjoy the various style series? Which are your favorites? Anything you’d like to see more of in 2016?

Look for Less

November 23, 2015

Happy Thanksgiving week!! (I still can’t wrap my head around the fact it’s already Thanksgiving!!) Today I’m excited to bring you a big ole Look for Less roundup!
This latest installment is a doozy…I just kept finding more and more great deals. I thought about saving some of them for a future post, but couldn’t stand not sharing all the golden tickets nuggets…so enjoy! And remember, to be fair, I don’t list sale prices in the graphics.
I already own these low version chukka boots (see the outfit here), and ADORE them! As do my mom and aunt…so they are multi-generational. And just so, so comfy!
