{Big Box Bathroom} The Reveal

February 3, 2015

One of the first things we said after deciding to move was, ‘Nooooooo, we just finished the new bathroom!! I don’t want to leave it!’ And funny enough, several of you had similar sentiments, ‘How can you stand to leave that wallpaper behind!?’

But when we started the Big Box Bathroom remodel last Fall, the idea of moving was non-existent in our minds. Our goal was to make better use of the space, making it more efficient, and feel larger for the kids, since they shared the small bathroom.

The previous design was always meant to be temporary, and worked fine when they were smaller…but when one becomes a teenager, and the other more involved with hairstyles…not to mention the need for privacy…the room became an issue. Hence why the remodel moved to the top of the list. Now you’d never even know it’s the same room!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Reveal

In order to truly appreciate the transformation, let’s look back at a Before shot (you can see them all here). Top to bottom, it was builder basic…with some really nasty floor tile, a wobbly toilet, and minimal storage and counter space.

We could have easily spent over $8,000 for a similar space, but instead we shopped the big box stores, and still created a high-end, designer space, for less than a third the cost.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel
Taking the shower tile to the ceiling really opened up the room, and the new vanity doubled their counter and storage space. Gorgeous Moroccan tiles replaced the grimy old ones, and add a touch of softness to the straight lines of the room.

I would have loved to carry the wallpaper all the way to the floor, but that would have blown our budget…so by installing wood planks, we were able to get a similar look, and only had to buy two rolls. Plus, I didn’t want to panic every time toothpaste and water splattered off the sink, and on the beautiful paper.

As you can see, I showed rare restraint and painted the door and window frame white. That really allowed the mirror and wallpaper to shine.

My original plan was to add the kid’s monograms in kelly green to the towels…but since they’ll each have their own bathroom in the new house (#hallelujah), I saved the expense. But wouldn’t that have been so cute?! And since it’s both a boy and a girl’s bath, I balanced the masculine and feminine elements so they’d both feel like it was customized for them.

In order to clear the small ledge at the top of the planks, we used extra long screws to mount the mirror to the wall, then placed a little wedge at the bottom so it wouldn’t lean forward.

Okay, one more Before and After…

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Reveal

I’m still shocked at the transformation…and we’ve lived with it for six weeks! Had we known we were moving, we’d never have started the project, but I like to think it contributed to the speedy sell. Or at least that’s how I’m rationalizing it to make myself feel better. But I really am going to miss that paper! Good thing I have a fair amount of remnants…I’ll find a way to take it with me!

{Big Box Bathroom} Days 5 & 6

December 15, 2014

Happy, happy Monday! I’m a little more excited about this Monday than usual…I think it’s because this is our last full week of the year! I am ready for some days off, and time spent at home just staring at the Christmas tree. How about we take a break from all the tinsel and catch up on our Big Box Bathroom remodel?! I know I’ve kind of kept you hanging…so today I’m hitting you with a double whammy….both Days 5 and 6!
When we left off (see Day 4 here), my rock-star contractor had pretty much finished up the big stuff…shower and floor tile grouted, vanity, sink and faucet installed, new scones wired, and all new trim and wall paneling hung. With all the electrical and plumbing involved, there was no way we were going to tackle most of that!

But I had no problem stepping in for the final leg (we did all the work we could in order to save on the budget), and we knocked the rest of it out in a weekend. The kids couldn’t wait to use the room again, so we added a quick shower curtain from Target, and an Ikea bathmat. I’m still undecided on whether or not to paint the window trim…it will likely be the last decision, once everything is in place.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The wall was patched where the original light fixture had been, then we sanded it smooth and painted. The color is a really warm charcoal, but it comes across black in these pictures for some reason. #amateurphotographer You’ll see in a minute why we chose this color. The mirror is just propped-up for now…I couldn’t wait to see how it’d all look together. The rest of the walls and ceiling got another coat of paint, as well.
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
We used tiny finishing nails to hang the wall boards, but still needed to spackle and sand the holes. Then the boards, along with all the trim, got a few coats of paint. We used a 1-inch piece of wood to give the wall panels a finished edge, and painted it the same white.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The old baseboards didn’t really jive with the new look, and it was easier to pull them off so the paneling could go all the way to the floor. Instead of actual molding, we used simple 1x3s as baseboards and trim around the door and window. They were installed after the panels and tile, so the floor extends under them.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
We went with a narrow profile toilet to make room for the additional 14-inches of vanity….it’s ridiculous how happy the new potty makes us. I’m willing to bet this is the only picture of a potty you’ll see in blogland today.
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5

I’ll source everything in the final post, but can you even believe these sconces are only $40?! #lowesforthewin

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Once we had the walls and trim painted, it became pretty clear our old white door wasn’t actually white…so we’ll be painting that next!
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
The vanity is amazing, and I love how it sits on feet, making it feel like a piece of furniture. We decided to forgo the included hardware for something softer and more unique….I’m thinking it will probably be these.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 5
Okay, you may recall the moodboard included wallpaper…so my final task for Day 5 was to prep the walls with Shieldz. It’s a clear, latex-based solution that gives the paper something to grab.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

Each day of this remodel was dramatic, but Day 6 really transformed the room, and was the one I was most looking forward to….can you blame me?! #swoon

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

I’ve loved this Hygge & West ‘Daydream’ paper for awhile, but had never seen this color way used…I think it’s just perfect for the kid’s shared space, equal parts masculine and feminine. We painted the ceiling charcoal for a seamless transition between it and the paper.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6
Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

I was concerned about hanging wallpaper in a teenager’s bathroom (hello, 20 minute shower), but our stellar installer said between the Shieldz, the jumbo fan we installed, and the prime level of adhesive he used, there’d be no problems.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6

The cloud shapes in this paper are pure white, so we went with the same color for the rest of the room. Except the door, it’s still the color of pee.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath Day 6
The wallpaper added the warmth and personality the room was lacking with all that white, and I could not be happier! Now I just need to add the finishing touches and accessories, and it’s final reveal time! What do you think so far?? And what about the window now that you’ve seen the paper…think I should paint it white, or leave it raw and seal it?

{Big Box Bathroom} Day 4

November 10, 2014

I hope you guys had a fun Fall weekend, and you’re ready to show Monday who’s boss! The wallpaper went up in our {Big Box Bathroom} last week, and I can’t wait to show you how drastically it changed the room…but first I have to catch you up on the progress prior to that (we’re documenting each step)! When we left off from Day 3, the shower had been tiled, and the new floors laid.

So here we are after Day 4…shower and floors grouted, vanity, counter-top, sconces and faucets installed, planks on the wall, new baseboards and a door frame. Oh, and we have a toilet again! I told you Day 4 was a doozie!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

It’s amazing how much brighter and larger the room feels with all the white, and taking the shower tile to the ceiling really opened it up even more. We chose the Style Selections 48-inch vanity and could not be happier with the quality and style. With four drawers and a cabinet, it’s essentially doubled the storage space, and the extra counter space will certainly come in handy as the kids get older.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Mr. Rockstar-Contractor patched the hole from the previous light fixture, then floated the wall to smooth out the mess left behind by the old builder-grade mirror. Once the wall planks were installed (we used 1/4-inch plywood, with a penny as the spacer between), they cut holes for the new sconces. Can you even believe those are Allen + Roth!? I did give them a quick coat of oil-rubbed bronze, but you can’t beat the price.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Oh hey there, toilet that doesn’t wobble when you sit on it!! Since the new vanity is 14-inches wider than the old one, we chose one with a narrow profile so it fits easily in the smaller space. I’ve never had a brand-new toilet, and it’s ridiculous how happy this makes me.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Instead of using tile end pieces to finish out the shower edge, we installed thin strips of wood from floor to ceiling, so it was a seamless transition from tile to wall. I’ll cover them with oil-based paint to make sure they are fully sealed from moisture.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Another strip of wood was attached at the top of the planks to give them a finished edge…I kept it small so it wouldn’t look like a ledge. I was dying to see how the mirror would look, so it’s propped up for now. Nevermind the roll of toilet paper…the kids started using the bathroom again as soon as the floor grout dried.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

I love the shape of the floor tiles against all the straight lines in the room…look at those curves!!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

More trim was added around the door and baseboards…the shape of the old ones didn’t fit with the new style. Plus it was easier to install the planks all the way to the floor, then add a new baseboard on top. I love a clean, simple look…so we went with basic flat boards. I wish I could replace our entire house with these!! And I only thought the door was white before…I guess that will be getting a new coat of paint, too.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

The shower went from a double-knob to a single, and new faucets were installed in the sink and shower.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Can you even believe how much was done in a single day?! Reason #712 I’m so glad we brought in the pros to help us with this one!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Day 4

Next up is spackling all the nail holes in the planks, and giving them a final coat of paint…as well as painting all the trim, walls and ceiling. I’m still undecided about painting the trim around the window or not…what do you think? The room looks a little stark and cold right now, but just wait…the really good stuff is coming!!

{Big Box Bathroom} Day 2

October 6, 2014

Monday morning rolled around way too fast over here…what about you? Between the State Fair of Texas and a local Art Festival, we had a great weekend full of family fun, and fried food! I think I have a junk food hangover this morning!

Things moved quickly last week on our Big Box Bathroom remodel...in fact, our rockstar-contractor is virtually done with his part…and now it’s up to us to finish it off. Even though it’s exciting to see the progress unfold every day on this end, I know it doesn’t make for pretty posts. But I also know many of you like the details of these types of projects, so I wanted to be sure and document the steps and decisions we faced along the way. And Day 2 was a busy one!

Once the demo was complete, we decided to go ahead and paint the ceiling and walls. The thinking was, it’d go faster since we wouldn’t have to tape it off or cut around trim, nor would we have to worry about drips and splatters on our brand new tile. It ended up not really helping much, since the rest of the remodel process is so messy, we’ll have to go back and paint some areas again. I put my best child-laborer on the job.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

Day 2 started with new (dry!) wet board being installed in the shower stall, followed by the tile.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

I sketched the cut-out I wanted for shampoo bottles and soap, and they created the area between studs. Yay for no more parade-of-bottles on the edge of the tub!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

You may have noticed the sliver of window in the Before shots…well, we beefed it up by framing it out with 3-inch trim. Now instead of being awkward, it will be part of the room’s design.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

My intent was to paint the trim white, but now I’m kind of digging the raw wood against the shiny tile. The design board also called for the shower tile to be laid on a herringbone pattern, but I was concerned that would get too busy…not to mention, more time-consuming to install…so I went with Allen + Roth 4×12 white subway tile in a brick pattern. The larger size cuts down on the number of grout lines, which is less busy on the eye, and easier for me to clean later!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

With only a single small window, the room can be pretty dark, so they installed two recessed lights (on dimmers!) in the ceiling, along with a jumbo-sized fan. For some reason the bathroom didn’t have a ventilation fan, and I’m not taking any chances with that gorgeous wallpaper! (I’ll paint the fan the same color as the ceiling.)

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

They also cut new holes and re-wired the wall for sconces. (Reason #87 we are grateful for professional help on this project!)

Remember we had a wonky, wobbly toilet…and they had to jackhammer the floor? Well, they re-installed the toilet thingie at the proper depth, and filled the surrounding hole with fresh concrete. (Reason #92)

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

In the meantime, they cut the 1/4-inch thick sheets of plywood in to 8-inch strips, and primed them. These will later be used to panel the bottom two-thirds of the walls.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

We special-ordered this Roth + Allen vanity from Lowes, and I’m thrilled with the quality! It’s solid wood with dovetail joints, and even though it means we have to tile the entire floor, I love how it sits high like a piece of furniture. Not to mention, it almost doubles the storage space of the previous vanity.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

It was a creamy-white, so we sprayed it the same bright white as the rest of the room. You can’t really see it, but they also added a piece of trim to the left-side edge so it will sit flush against the bathroom wall once the top is added.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

I’m not sure what hardware I’ll use on it, so they puttied over the holes, as well.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bathroom Remodel, Days 2 & 3

They finished out the day by taking the shower tile all the way to the ceiling.

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath remodel Day 2

Now the shower feels twice as big! And I’m crazy about the dark paint against the white tiles!

Hi Sugarplum | Big Box Bath remodel Day 2

What do you think about the wood tones? Should I leave them with just a clear seal, or paint them white? Can you even believe the transformation of this room in only two days?!
