Work to Weekend | Bootcut Jeans

September 22, 2016

Don’t you just love Thursdays, and the promise they hold? It’s practically Friday, which might as well be the weekend! Or least that’s how I like to spin it. My offices have always had casual Fridays, but even still, I could have gotten away with wearing certain denim during the week, too.

Especially a dark rinse bootcut that fit like a glove. I sang the praises of these jeans in my Blazer & Bootcuts post last month, and I just can’t get enough of them! They are insanely flattering, and so comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I love my skinny jeans…particularly my distressed ones…but it’s almost a relief to pull on a pair of jeans where nothing pops out!

For today’s style inspiration, I’m wearing my favorite bootcut jeans for both Work and Weekend.

Blouse (similar on sale) | Statement Necklace | Bootcut Jeans | Similar Leopard Belt
Patent Pumps | Similar Blush Bag | Sunglasses | Earrings | Watch | Link Bracelet

Not only do these jeans hold everything in place, but I can bend over without putting on a crack show! And thanks to the dark rinse, mid-rise, and longer inseam, my legs look a mile long. Okay, okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But I look taller than my actual 5’4″, right?!

When paired with a blouse and classic black pumps, the look is ready for the office. I threw on the statement necklace and leopard belt because I can’t help myself…but if that’s too much for your work environment, the outfit is just as chic without.

Fit Tip: I originally thought these jeans were true-to-size, but after a full wear, I realized you actually need to size down one. I’m wearing a regular 0, and the length is perfect for heels. The petite size was significantly shorter, and ideal for flats.

Blouse (similar on sale) | Statement Necklace | Bootcut Jeans | Similar Leopard Belt

Similar Blush Bag | Sunglasses | Earrings | Watch | Link Bracelet | Ring

Sugarplum Style Tip: Get the most flattering fit out of your bootcut jeans by pairing them with heels, and make sure the hem barely brushes the floor. I prefer a pointy-toe, but as long as your shoe is visible beneath the jeans, you’re good. If you’re more comfortable in flats, stick with a pointy toe (like these), and have the hem brush the top of your foot.

Bootcut Jeans

This blouse is a soft mix of knit and rayon, so it drapes beautifully. It’s actually long enough to pair with leggings, but can be tucked in jeans, slacks or a skirt, as well. I also love it with this classic pencil skirt.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS in the top. The petite size fit me well, too, but isn’t long enough for leggings.

And as great as a bootcut jean looks for work, it’s even more smashing for a night out! Paired with a simple camisole and some statement jewels, they are date night ready. I’ve worn this exact combination of top and accessories with my skinny jeans and boots, but the bootcut jeans and heels take it to a whole other level.

Camisole Tank (available in 12 colors!) | Bootcut Jeans | Necklace | Similar Leopard Pumps
Similar Leather Jacket | Clutch | Sunglasses | Watch | Link Bracelet | Earrings

Y’all…look at my legs! Keep in mind I’m only 5’4″, and I have a long torso! I’m not what you’d consider leggy. Long legs are not my gift. You get where I’m going with this? There’s magic in these jeans I tell ya! (Mom, these are the ones I was telling you about! Order them in petite, but go down a size. xo)

Camisole Tank (available in 12 colors!) | Bootcut Jeans | Necklace | Similar Leopard Pumps
Similar Leather Jacket | Clutch | Sunglasses | Watch | Link Bracelet | Earrings

I have this tank in three colors…it’s a great layering piece under jackets and blazers, and sassy on it’s own.

Here’s another work wear look featuring the bootcut jeans you may remember from this post.
Favorite Tee | Pleated-Back Knit Blazer (on sale!) | Mid-Rise Bootcut Jeans
Leopard Heels | Color-Block Clutch | Ring | Watch | Bracelet | Necklace

These jeans really go a long way, and somehow manage to make every combination stylish. Have you worn bootcut jeans in awhile? There’s a reason why they keep coming back…they’re pretty much universally flattering! Happy practically the weekend, lovebugs!

Work to Weekend | Striped Skirt

June 23, 2016

As much as I love new things and places, I’m also a creature of habit. I think most of us stick with what we know, places we trust, and people we like. Same is true for shopping…I tend to gravitate to the same retailers time and again. Even when I spy something I really like on someone, if it’s a retailer I’ve never shopped before, I’ll likely not order it!

Which is dumb if I think about it, because what’s the worst that can happen…I have to send it back?! That’s not so bad. So when ModCloth asked me to check them out, I jumped at the chance to try a new (to me) shop. It only took five seconds of browsing their site before my decision was solidified, and another 2.2 seconds to find this darling striped skirt. A few minutes later, I had a Work to Weekend planned out in my head (and about 10 things in my cart!).

Floral Blouse (on sale!) | Striped Skirt | Red Crossbody Bag | Two-Toned Sandals

I’ve been hearing about ModCloth for years, and always loved the vintage vibe of some of their collections, along with their extended sizing…but in that whole creature of habit thing, hadn’t yet tried them for myself.

The shipping was fast and free, and I was thrilled to find I loved everything I ordered! The quality is spot-on with the price points, too, and the fit is true-to-size. I’m pretty smitten, and already have my eye on several dresses (shown at the bottom of the post), so don’t be surprised if they pop up around here more often.

As for styling the striped skirt…of course you can’t go wrong with any solid top…but I wanted to show you how fun it is paired with a floral. And because I love to push it even further, I added the sassy red cross body.

Floral Blouse (on sale!) | Striped Skirt | Red Crossbody Bag | Two-Toned Sandals
These sandals have a surprising amount of cushion, and I had no issues twirling and jumping all day in them. (Because that’s what striped skirts with pockets make you do…twirl and jump!)

Sugarplum Style Tip: Forget what your mom said about not wearing black with blue…you absolutely can! Just be sure the blue is a lighter hue so it contrasts with the dark black.

Red Crossbody Bag | Chain Bracelet
 Two-Toned Sandals

Fit Tip: The skirt is a sturdy cotton, and fully lined. My usual size XS is a tad tight in the waist, but the elastic in the back of the waistband eases any discomfort.

Floral Blouse (on sale!) | Striped Skirt | Two-Toned Sandals

The skirt is just too fun for just weekdays, so I paired it with a graphic tee and my favorite sneaks for casual weekend wear.

Sugarplum Style Tip: You want to keep your top fitted with fuller skirts like these, but if your tee is too big, just knot the extra fabric at the waist.

You know my theory is clothes should be fun…and I can’t think of outfits more fun than these! Would you agree? Have you tried ModCloth before?

Work to Weekend

February 26, 2016

Cheers to Friday! What’s on your agenda for the weekend? We’ve got a soccer game and an organizing project to tackle, but that’s about it, and I’m thrilled with the lack of plans! We’re headed out of town for Spring Break, so maybe I’ll actually get a jump on the laundry/packing/planning that comes with getting a family of four on an airplane! Or maybe I’ll just binge Netflix. My money’s on Netflix.

I get a lot of requests for work-appropriate styles, so I’ve been trying to include them more often. Granted, my work environment is fairly casual, so some of them might still be too laid-back for you, but hopefully you can adapt them to fit your office.

These sassy shoes have quickly become my latest obsession (I picked them up for our trip to NYC last week)…I knew they were darling with the saucy tie on the back, but I was shocked by just how comfortable they are! And the thicker straps keep me from feeling too exposed this time of year.

So since I’ve been looking for opportunities to wear them, I created {Work to Weekend} styles around them, and my trusty white oxford.

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend
Blazer | White Oxford | Strappy Heels | Blush Handbag
Sunglasses in Rose Gold | Dark Jeans

I love the feeling I get when I put on a blazer…like I really mean business! #girlpower I seem to reach for it when I have a meeting where I want to be taken seriously, but I also love it paired with a white tee and booties.

Style Tip: Pearls or something blingy keep business attire from looking too masculine. I can still be a #girlboss without looking like a man! #girlsruleboysdrool

Pearl Cluster Necklace | Earrings

The heels look great peeking out of trousers, but I opted for dark-rinse jeans so I could cuff them and show the cute tie-back. We’re still another month or so away from being able to wear skirts again (without tights anyway), but they’ll definitely transition with the season. These are a great closed-toe version without the tie if that’s more your style

This classic bag is perfect for  carrying my laptop, and the soft pink shade adds a feminine touch. (It’s also a great Look for Less for this high-end bag!)

Now let’s switch it up for the weekend! The heels make it a great edgy {Date Night Style}, but you could easily swap them for booties for a more casual day look.

Do you have any saucy heels that make you feel empowered? Well, you should! And do blazers work #girlpower magic on you, too? Oh, and sidenote…my sweater was flipped up in the Weekend look, unbeknownst to me…it’s not, nor is it intended to be, a crop top.  #aintnobodygotabsforthat Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Work to Weekend | Plaid

January 12, 2016

You guys! I spent all of yesterday with a lump in my throat, and occasionally tears in my eyes, by the generosity of your kind comments, texts, and emails! I am so humbled (and a bit relieved!) that you related and liked my emotional dumping in yesterday’s ‘Doing It All?’ post. As humbling as it was to share some of my flaws, I’m thrilled to realize we’re all in the same boat!

I won’t turn this blog into a mush-pot, but thank you for allowing me to pull back the veil for a moment and share another part of myself. Now let’s get back to the colorful posts that include clean hair and brushed teeth!

I’ll admit, I tend to reach for jeans and boots this time of year, but that’s not exactly work-appropriate. I’ve always worked in fairly casual office environments, but I still lean towards a more polished, professional style on most days…even Fridays.

For today’s post, I took my favorite plaid shirt, and styled it two ways, for {Work & Weekend}.

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend

I snapped these pics a few weeks ago when the weather was milder, so I’ll add tights (these are my favorites) and a black cardigan (like this one) when I repeat it. The plaid + spots + leopard is speaking my love language! If a pattern-trifecta is a bit much for you, swap the leopard pumps for black (like these), or the spotted skirt for a solid (like this one).

Watch | Tassel Bracelet | Crystal Necklace (similar) | Ring (50% off!)

I’ve had this skirt for a few years (see it worn here), and thanks to the thicker fabric, I’m able to make it work for multi-seasons. The a-line keeps it flattering and office-appropriate, but the pattern gives it personality.

Style Tip: Don’t automatically split your wardrobe by Summer and Winter…many items can crossover with the right accessories swap.

Now let’s mix up the plaid for a fun night out, or casual-Friday work wear. Well, maybe skip the fur vest at the office. #rawr

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend
Plaid Blouse (similar & similar) | Jeans | Fur Vest | Hat
Sunglasses | Necklace | Leopard Pumps
A plaid top and jeans is fairly basic on it’s own, but paired with fun jewels and shoes, it’s definitely kicked up a notch. I used the Power of Three to show how the vest and fringe bag take it to an even more stylish level.

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend

Style Tip: Boots are a definite go-to this time of year, but don’t forget your fun heels on the weekend. If the weather allows it, swap your boots for heels on evenings out.

Hi Sugarplum | Work to Weekend
Plaid Blouse (similar & similar) | Jeans | Fur Vest | Leopard Pumps | Watch | Tassel Bracelet

Style Tip: If you’re on the short petite side like me, go for a narrow cuff on your skinny jeans when paired with heels (if the jeans are too long). A wider cuff will shorten your legs. #ack If wearing a bootcut jean, let it graze the top of your foot.

This vest is courtesy of the darling Jenny Collier at Gray Monroe, and I was blown away by the quality for the price! It looks like there’s only a few sizes left, but I found these affordable versions here and here.

I prefer my hat brims to have more structure than the one I wore in these pics, so I’ve since swapped it for this one.

Do you have a work-week and weekend wardrobe, or do you mix it all up? What about pattern…are you a one-at-a-time girl, or more-the-merrier?
