Project Little Miss | Study Nook Reveal

July 28, 2016

Thanks so much for the comments on yesterday’s post…I’m thrilled you’re on-board with my peep-toe bootie obsession! I know they sold out yesterday, but be sure to keep checking back, because new stock looks to be coming in everyday.

Today I’m excited to share the latest progress on Project Little Miss…her new homework/creative zone!

She’s entering her final year of elementary school #insertuglycry so it’s time she had a dedicated spot that allows her to focus on her work…but also be a special area to cultivate her creativity.

The original room plans called for the desk to be in her room, but Santa had other plans when he brought the world’s largest Barbie house this past Christmas. It now occupies the only free wall space in her room, so we’ve decided to utilize the little zone just outside her room for now. Turns out, it was the perfect spot for a desk area, and the surrounding Bonus Room had space for a dedicated reading nook, and play set.

Desk | Striped Rug | Rolling Chair | Circle Shelves | Panda Heads | Arrow Plaque Hooks

That dimple rules my world. #allthehearteyes

Striped Top | Faux Glasses
Beanbag | Pillow | Unicorn | Book Cubbie | Pom Pom Garland

I think it’s pretty obvious she’s thrilled with the outcome, and we had so much fun creating it together. The hardest part was narrowing down which PillowFort items we wanted to use….every last one is too-cute-for-words, and so affordable (especially right now, since it’s all on sale)! In fact, a few items have already ‘found their way’ to other parts of the house!

This little space already has her excited for back-to-school, and new creative projects…there must be magic woven in that darling collection!? Check out the other PillowFort makeovers created by my blogger-pals Kristin Jackson and Emily Clark over at the Target Bullseye and Good Housekeeping!

Project Little Miss | Study Nook Plans

July 13, 2016

Thanks for your sweet comments on yesterday’s twirling dress…I’m already looking for an excuse to wear it again. Think it’s too much for taco night?! 😉

The progress in Little Miss’s Room has been slow and steady…pretty much like the rest of the house…but I’m determined to finish her sweet space this Summer. Or at the very least, the homework/creative zone.

The little nook has actually already undergone a mini-makeover of it’s own…here it is on closing day with yellow walls, and honey oak railings.

And again on moving day, after a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams ‘Repose Gray.’

The opening on the left leads to our son’s room, and door on right is Little Miss’s room.
And here it is today (after a major toy declutter…seems she’d already claimed the space as her own!), with freshly painted banisters and rails.
The space is basically an extension of the Bonus Room, and overlooks the Foyer, but offers enough privacy and quiet for these early years of school. We may need to relocate it once she’s older…but then again, big brother will be in college by the time Little Miss hits high school, so she’ll have the upstairs to herself. #insertmoreuglycries

I partnered with Target’s new kids decor line, PillowFort, to design the colorful space. The products are stylish, fun, and extremely affordable…and we are cuckoo for virtually every piece! I love the whimsical prints and fresh color palette, and it’s chic enough to fit seamlessly with the rest of the home. I think it will also easily transition as she grows, too.

This is what we’ve got in mind right now, but she’s hoping the teepee finds it’s way in the mix, too.

‘Girls Rule’ Wire Wall Decor | Bean Bag | Unicorn | Tassel Throw Pillow
Panda Head Wall Decor | Aqua Pillow | Pom Pom Pillow | Striped Rug
Task Lamps | Desk | Swivel Chair | Flamingo
‘Hip Hip Hooray’ Pillow | Fabulous Wall Art

I’m hoping this whimsical space will encourage her creative streak, but also take some of the dread out of homework! We’ve been working on it together for the past few weeks, so fingers-crossed we’ll be sharing it soon. Do your kids have a dedicated homework/creative area? Any tips for things we should include to make the space more appealing to her?

Project Little Miss | Art & Bedding

October 5, 2015

Monday?! Dang, that came fast! We had the most glorious weather this weekend…and now I have a case of serious Fall Fever. We spent most of our time outside, but did manage to make a dent in Little Miss’s room, thanks to some gorgeous new art from Minted, and fun pom-pom bedding.

Hi Sugarplum | Project Little Miss

You may remember the DIY Large Art she had over her bed in the last house. Yeah, well, that met an untimely death during the move. So when we started putting her new room together, I asked what she wanted to hang over her bed. She didn’t even hesitate before saying, “A big horse picture, please!”

I thought about creating another one ourselves, but when Minted asked us to help spread the word about their new large format framed art, I didn’t even hesitate before saying, “A big horse picture, please!”

Hi Sugarplum | Project Little Miss

I searched their art selection for ‘horse,’ and let my daughter choose her favorite. Since it’s on the room’s focal wall, we chose their largest print size, but opted for a white frame so the art would really pop. For someone who loves color so much, I’m completely cuckoo over these bright white walls! They feel so fresh, and everything looks great next to them.

Hi Sugarplum | Project Little Miss

The art arrived immaculately packed, and perfectly framed…all we had to do was throw a nail in the wall, and BAM! Beautiful statement piece! Horses and art are Little Miss’s passions (as evidenced by four consecutive years of art parties, and her former artist gallery wall!), so she couldn’t be happier with it. You can choose if you want your art piece signed or not, and I thought it so respectful that she insisted the artist sign her work.

Another goal on the list was to swap out the last remnant of the Parisian theme from her former room…the bedding. My intent was to make a bunch of pom-poms and attach them to an Ikea duvet (similar to this project), but this duvet was too easy good to pass up on a recent sale!

It’s the perfect amount of color without overwhelming the room…which is key considering what we’re using for drapes! Looks like I need to touch-up the bed paint, and cover the box spring with sheet, too.

Tip: Fitted sheets are inexpensive ways to cover box springs, while adding more color or pattern to your bed!

What should we tackle next…the drapes or new nightstands? No more horsing around, we’re knocking this room out! #harhar #punny

{Project List}
Bedding  //  Replace the last bit of her old Paris theme with this pom duvet
Rug  //  Balance the color of the painted ceiling with color on the floor
Drapes  //  Define & highlight the windows with lively drapes
Nightstands  //  Create more storage & balance the room with matching nightstands
Lamps  //  Another light source for nighttime stories
Closet  //  Organize & create more storage
Desk  //  Carve out a homework/creative zone
Art  //  Create a focal point with large art over the bed
Gallery Wall  //  Add life & energy with a colorful wall of art (likely her own like we did here)

{Bonus Room} Makeover with the Ikea Home Tour Squad!

February 23, 2016

Hey Hey Hey!! I’m so excited to share today’s post with you, but first, thanks so much for your response to yesterday’s new series, Sugarplum Style Tips! I’m thrilled you liked it because I have tons of ideas for more posts. And if you got the Invisible Heels, be sure to let me know what you think!

Now let’s get down to the business of today and a surprise room reveal! I told you in last week’s House Report post that I was lucky enough to collaborate with Ikea for our Bonus Room makeover, and they just surprised me with the finished video! Starting with the reveal is a little backwards from how I usually do things around here, but I couldn’t wait to show you, so we’ll just go in reverse order this go-round.

Let me give you a little background…Ikea contacted me late last year and asked if I had a problem area in our home I’d like to tackle with their help. Um, we just moved, how about 87 problem areas!? But the first one that came to mind, was the upstairs Bonus Room, and the big rats nest of cords we had thanks to the TV, stereo, video games, music gear, etc, etc, etc. My goal was to get the TV mounted, and corral all the cords and components in a tidy little media console.

Well, Ikea not only loved that idea, but also the potential of the entire space (which was already anchored by the Ikea sectional from our previous Family Room), and suggested a full room makeover…all done on video! #signmeup #action

Hi Sugarplum | Gameroom Makeover

But let’s first start with the room as it looked when we bought the house…a great space at the top of the stairs, with a large window seat and skylight, and hosed down in yellow. Since the kid’s rooms are upstairs, we knew it’d be the perfect hangout for them and their friends. And also a casual zone for the whole family.

Even though it’s upstairs, the open floor plan means the walls are a continuation from downstairs, so it’s painted the same color as the main areas on the first floor…SW ‘Repose Gray’. And to make the room feel even bigger, we carried the wall color all the way up the pitched ceiling. Then for the next year, it looked like this…

Enough of a room for the kids to wallow and watch movies, but completely unfinished. The disarray was easy for me to overlook considering it’s upstairs, and I’m usually only up there to gather dirty laundry, so the room kept getting backburnered.

But in the last few months, I’ve become devastatingly aware of how fleeting the time with our son still living here is, and I didn’t want to wait any longer to create a space where he and his friends want to hang. Because you mamas of teenagers know, you’d much prefer them hanging at your house! I know how lucky we are to even have this bonus room, so might as well make the most of it while the kids are still here! #sob

The door on the left leads to Little Miss’s Room

The first step was to meet with the Ikea Home Tour Squad. This amazing crew of Ikea-loving, talented peeps came over just before Christmas, and we chatted up all my goals and ideas for the room:

1. Clean up the cords & media components
2. Create storage
3. Add seating & tabletop play areas
4. Incorporate music gear
5. Inject our family’s personality

Then they returned last month bursting with solutions and energy, and together, we transformed the room in two days! Well, they did 95% of the work…including all the assembly! #praiseGod #meandIkeaassemblydontmix

We hid the room from the kids until it was complete so we could surprise them with the reveal…and their reactions were priceless! I worked on the room from start to finish, but even I was overwhelmed by the final transformation.

To see the full makeover, including the process and why we’re laughing so hard, watch the video below (or click here to watch directly on YouTube if the embedded video isn’t working for you).

It was definitely the most fun I’ve ever had on a room makeover, and I can’t thank the brilliant Ikea Home Tour Squad enough for their ideas, hard work, amazing attitudes, and oh yeah…a finished room in just two days!

We only had about 30 minutes for the final styling, so it’s mostly just staged for filming at this point. I’ve been working on actual organization and adjusting it to fit our specific needs and style, and will share all the details, breakdown, and supply list with you soon. Until then, make sure to check out the video, and try to ignore my excessive ‘Whoooo!’s.
