Tips for Looking Stylish at the Beach

September 9, 2015

And just like that, it’s Wednesday! Ahhh, short weeks…the next best thing to long weekends! It’s amazing what just one extra day does for the soul! I put my phone/computer down for an entire 24-hours over the weekend…and although I felt a little panicky at times (I had no idea how reliant I’d become on being constantly connected!), it felt so good to be ultimately connected where it matters most…at home.

I started these no-phone breaks for myself earlier in the Summer after my kids made a few flippant comments about always seeing the top of my head (not because they’re taller than me, but because I was always bent over my phone). I realized if I want our kids to stay engaged while we’re together, I needed to lead by example.

I used to think I was a really good multi-tasker, using the phone to stay on top of work, emails, and social media. But never fully separating myself from those responsibilities was causing me resentments and stress, and at the same time, diluting my time with the family! My inbox might be a little scarier on Monday mornings now, but I’m a lot more sane and content to tackle it!

Wow…hello, side rant! How about we get to the business of today’s post…looking effortlessly stylish on beach vacations!

Hi Sugarplum | Island Style

We spent our last full week of Summer on Anna Maria Island (read the {Trip Report} here), and like my no-phone rule, the point of beach vacations is no stress! So I packed very little (everything for the week fit in my favorite new Weekender Bag), and left the hair dryer and most of my makeup at home.

I chose only pieces that could be worn everywhere from the beach and cafes, to boat excursions and evening cocktails. And with a few statement accessories, the outfits transitioned seamlessly, and still looked chic.

These beaded tassel bracelets have been my go-to accessory lately…they add such a fun dash of color, and pair with virtually every outfit. The response to them has been so overwhelming, they’ve decided to extend the special price one last week, for Hi Sugarplum readers only! Use code SUGARPLUM at checkout, and the trio set is only $20! Hello, great Christmas gifts, too!

{Tips for Staying Stylish on Beach Vacations}
*Don’t fight your natural hair texture…just go with it, or use hats to tame the beast.
*Lightweight dresses & rompers make chic swimsuit cover-ups, & use minimal suitcase space.
*Bright lipstick & a few key accessories will transition you from beach to dinner.
*Colorful totes or straw bags double as beach bag and purse.
*Save the heels for home & bring flip-flops & sandals that are beach-easy and street-chic.

Hi Sugarplum | Island Style

And don’t forget to smile, relax & have fun….that’s the most stylish look of all!

Sidenote: Mr. SP told me to jump in the air, and he snapped this in one take! Looks like this girl’s got hops! #notreally But remember this one?

Hi Sugarplum | Island Style

Sugarplum Style, Vol. 24

March 4, 2016

Cheers to Friday! And not just any Friday, but for us it’s the start of Spring Break! WooHoo! We’re packing all our layers and coats, and headed north. After the puny Winter we had here in Texas, we’re actually looking forward to a week of snow and cold weather. If you’re interested to see where we land and what we’re up to, you can follow along on Instagram and Facebook, but make sure to come back here next week…I’ve got lots of great posts lined up!

Today it’s time for another Sugarplum Style…snapshots of my everyday outfits, created by mixing-and-matching items in my closet. And thanks to our sporadic weather, it’s a mixed bag of layers.

If I had to choose one item in my closet that makes the biggest impact on my everyday outfits, I’d say it’s a striped tee. Peeking out from under sleeves and hems, or layered under a jacket, it gives such a fun extra punch of pattern for every season. I have several favorites, including this one and this one.

Cozy Layers of Plaid & Stripes // Am I the only one who was excited for the return of cold weather this week?!? I'm just not ready to pack up my sweaters & scarves! 💙💚 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2cafx
Sweater | Striped Top | Scarf | Jeans | Booties | Watch

Vests are great for transitioning to new seasons, when it’s still a little chilly, but not cold enough for a full coat.

Layered up for these crazy cold mornings & warm afternoons. #texaswinter #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/283yI
Vest | Buffalo Check Shirt | Favorite Leggings | Boots | Watch

Remember this combo from our recent {Date Night Style}? Pink + Red forever!

💗❤️Date Night scheming❤️💗 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/29r5m
Pink Coat (similar) | Sweater | Jeans | Leopard Heels
Pom Pom Clutch | Pendant Necklace

I think my cost-per-wear on this tunic is now down to pennies. #maggiephotobomb

No team colors for me today, but bring on the chips & dips! 🏈🍻 Sidenote: I lost my old cognac crossbody bag & since I carried it so often, I went ahead & ordered another one.😭 The upside is I love this one even more! 😍#silver
Sweater Tunic | Jeans | Crossbody Bag | Booties
Sunglasses | Watch | Spike Bracelet | Hoop Earrings

Packing used to be my nemesis, but now I actually enjoy it! My tip? Lay everything out you think you want to take, and create several outfits using as few pieces as possible. This helps eliminate items that only work for one outfit (especially shoes!). And then snap a pic of each….that makes it easier to get dressed while on your trip. See more of my packing tips here.

Cold & Rainy...I'm ready for ya! ☔️❄️💗 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2bWxW
Pink Coat | Sweater | Jeans | Rainboots | Necklace

You say addiction, I say collection. #gimmeallthegingham

Hi sugarplum | sugarplum style
Pink | Coral | Green | Aqua | Blue | Navy | Lilac | Black | Garment Rack

It doesn’t get much easier than a pullover sweater and scarf, but the leopard makes it anything but basic.

Kept my Monday pink-streak alive today! 💗 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/29I80
Leopard Scarf | Sweater | Jeans | Boots | Watch

This outfit is the epitome of ‘Transitioning to Spring’ for me. You can see my other transition outfits and tips here, and stay tuned for a new post with more ideas soon!

Back to 70-degrees & fewer layers today. ☀️😍 #winterintexas #sugarplumstyle #maggiesugarplum // www.liketk.it/2b7gU
Striped Tee (similar) | Similar Scarf | Jeans | Crossbody Bag
Booties | Watch | Spike Bracelet

This was another outfit creation while packing…I wanted to make sure I had enough options to justify bringing the extra pair of boots. But they’re rainboots with dogs…of course I was going to justify bringing them!

Late night packing session. Destination: C.O.L.D.❄️✈️ (Why oh why do I always wait until the last second??) #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2anKI
Faux-Fur Parka Coat | Sweater (similar) | Jeans | Rainboots

And thank goodness I did…you don’t see me complaining about the rain in Central Park! (My New York {Trip Report} coming up soon!)

Let it rain! ☔️💕 #sugarplumtravels #sugarplumstyle // @liketoknow.it www.liketk.it/2aUKQ #liketkit
Pink Coat | Sweater | Jeans | Rainboots | Crossbody Bag

I’ve also started creating fun outfits on Sunday nights…having something cute to wear has helped take the sting out of Mondays.

Classic Neutrals // Love the light weight & softness of this sweater...and it's hard to beat cashmere for less than $50! #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2bhSY
Leopard Scarf | Sweater | Jeans | Booties | Tassel Bracelet
I don’t know what’s gotten in to me, but I’ve had some Neutral Nellie in me this season! And I like it!
Neutral Layers // Camel & Gray was one of my fave combos this season.🐪🌚😋 Unrelated Sidenote: I get asked about my bed a lot, so thought you might want to know that a) I love it & am very happy with the quality, & b)
Similar Sweater | Jeans | Crossbody Bag | Pendant Necklace | Leopard Cuff
Boots | Peacoat | Phone Case | Earrings | Watch

My travel style is always about comfort first, then style. These jeans feel and move like leggings, and the dark rinse makes them a little dressier. They’re also higher on the waist, so there’s no crack incidents when bending over for your bag! (Sidenote: Word on the street is they’re being discontinued, so grab them now if you’re interested!) (Sidenote to my Sidenote: Mom, you’d really like them, and they’re true-to-size!!)

And away we gooooooooo!✈️ I'd say 'follow along & see where we're going on my snapchat' but I'm not on snapchat. 😋 #aintnobodygottimeforthat  #sugarplumtravels #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2aqja
Parka | Sweater | Jeans | Boots | Scarf | Bag | Sunglasses

Nothing jazzes a button-up more than a pearl cluster!

Today's outfit inspired by Spring-like temps & Valentine school parties. Cheers to Friday & raiding the kids candy haul! 🎉🍭🍬💗 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2ajnB
Gingham Shirt | Pearl Cluster Necklace | Jeans | Loafers
Watch | Similar Bag | Tassel

Date Night scheming with my favorite new heels! See them in action here.

Date Night Scheming 💋 A movie is on the agenda...what's good??? We've seen Revenant, Brooklyn & Kung Fu Panda. 🐻🗽🐼💯 #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2byGL #mysolesociety @solesociety
Moto Jacket | Pink Top | Jeans | Heels | Bracelet | Bag

A Texan in New York City….leave no skin uncovered! (I took the gloves off to snap a pic, and pulled the scarf away from my face so the store didn’t think I was robbing them!)

A Texan in New York. 🐴🍎#noskinleftuncovered #ladylibertyphotobomb 🗽 #sugarplumtravels #sugarplumstyle // www.liketk.it/2aDtK
Coat | Hat | Scarf | Jeans | Boots

It’s never too soon to start thinking about swimsuits…especially when they’re this cute, and buy one get one half off!!! And my favorite straw fedora is back…and only $16! Which is great since I replace mine every year.

Who's ready for summer?! 😎🌴⛱ This cute suit & tons of others are all BOGO half-off! And my fave straw fedora is back & only $16! Details & my top picks found here 👉 www.liketk.it/2cx0j // #sugarplumstyle
Peasant Blouse | Swimsuit | Straw Fedora | Sunglasses | Tassel Bracelets

I hope these posts inspire you to create new combinations from your closet! The key isn’t to have more clothes, but to mix up what you do have in new and different ways. Except this tunic and these jeans, you need those. #trustme #enabler

You can catch up with past installments of Sugarplum Style here, or follow my everyday-style outfits on InstaGram. Make sure you’re following my Facebook page, too…that’s where I post deals, steals, sales and goodies! Happy weekend, lovebugs!

{Best of 2015} Travel

January 7, 2016

I loved every second of 2015 (okay, there were a few rough patches, so most every second), and one of the biggest reasons was because of all the travel opportunities. Between my sister’s wedding, vacations, blog conferences, and the Redbook cover, I packed my bags 12 times last year! (See my packing tips here.)

My grandparents used to pack up several times a year, and travel to amazing places for weeks at a time, so I learned early-on that the world is as accessible as you’re willing to be. One of the reasons Mr. SP and I work so hard is for the chance to travel together. Even in those early years, when we lived on peanuts, we still found ways to explore. (I honed my budget-travel skills then!)

These were the most popular {Trip Reports} of last year, and hopefully a good resource for those of you thinking of packing your bags somewhere fun in 2016!

Skagway, Alaska

Juneau, Alaska
Ketchikan, Alaska
Seattle, Washington
Big Sky, Montana
Summer in New York City

Spring in New York City

Anna Maria Island, Florida
Dallas Staycation

Cozumel, Mexico

Sharing our travel trials and errors, and tips with you has become one of the most gratifying of this blog. I love hearing how these {Trip Reports} helped with planning your own travels, and hope to continue making them a resource for you. I know how hard it is to save and get away, so I work very hard to make them honest, authentic, and helpful, using only my own experiences.

Do you have travel plans for this year? We don’t have anything booked yet, and I’m already starting to get antsy! Tomorrow wraps up my look back at 2015, and it’s a personal one.

NYC Street Style + Guide

October 2, 2015

I don’t know what’s gotten in to ya’ll this week, but I’m floating on a blogger-high from all your crazy-kind comments! Thank you, and don’t ever stop! #kiddingnotkidding
What do you have planned for the weekend? From the looks of things, some of you will be hunkering down to stay out of the rain. I’m hoping to tackle some closet organizing. And eat tacos. But I have a feeling I know which one will actually happen.
It’s hard to wrap my head around, but I’ve had the privilege of traveling to New York City three times this year! Once for my sister’s bachelorette party, another for the Redbook photoshoot, and most recently, for the BHG Stylemaker Event.
I adore visiting, and soaking up the vibrancy of the city, but I don’t think I could actually live there. My younger, single self would have loved every second of NYC life…but practical, carpool-driving me can’t imagine it.
But that’s part of New York’s magic…for a few days, I get to pretend I’m living the ‘Sex and the City’ life (minus the sex part, seeing as how Mr. SP stayed home), with late-night dinners, tipsy cab-rides, and anything-goes street style.
Hi Sugarplum | NYC Street Style
I still keep my outfits casual and comfy, but pulled together enough so I can pop in most anywhere. Jeans were my go-to on this recent trip…silly me thought, ‘September in New York City…that will be crisp and Fall!’ Wrong…it was hot! Fortunately I’d packed my usual layers and was able to stay comfortable.

I’m planning a more comprehensive {Trip Report} of what we’ve done and liked in the Big Apple, but wanted to give you the basics in case you have a trip planned this season.

{Where We’ve Stayed}

// London Hotel //
The top-floor apartment was perfect for our large bachelorette party, as there was plenty of room for everyone to lounge, sleep and get ready. The staff and lobby bar were very nice, and the location superb. This hotel is the epitome of city cool, but you’ll pay for it.

// Dream Hotel Midtown //
This trendy little spot has fairly large double rooms by New York standards, and a great location.

// The Hudson Hotel //
Chic boutique hotel with beautiful rooftop views, courtyard bar & restaurant, and tons of InstaGram-worthy nooks throughout…but the world’s smallest rooms. Seriously, like postage stamp sized.

Hi Sugarplum | NYC Street Style

{Favorite Eats}

// Minetta Tavern //
Easily the best hamburger of my life. And the restaurant just feels like New York.

// The Polo Bar //
One of the hardest spots to get in, but it’s not a night you’ll soon forget. It’s like being inside a Ralph Lauren catalog, with handsome servers, delicious food and celebrities.

// Otto //
Bustling, casual, delicious. Order the cheese sampler with apricot & cherries, and you’ll die happy.

Travel tip: The sidewalk carts serve some pretty tasty street food, but be sure to only stop at the very busy ones!

Travel Tip: I use Uber and cabs for rides around the city (and only in a group), but I hire Premier Transportation for trips to and from any airport in the world. Yes, it costs more, but especially now that I’m flying alone more often, Mr. SP and I feel so much safer knowing I’m in the hands of background-checked, insured professionals! And I sure as heck don’t want an Uber driver knowing where I live!
