{One Room Challenge} Let There Be Light

October 28, 2015

Welcome back to Week 4 of the {One Room Challenge}! Let’s recap for those popping in for the first time…we’re tackling the ‘formal’ Living Room for this go-round (we did our Master Bedroom in the previous ORC). My goal was to create the feel of a jewel-box, with deep colors, lots of glam, and an element of drama, and I’m collaborating on the room with the most talented girl I know!

Week 1 I showed the Before shots and room layout, Week 2 was all about the Design, Plans, and a big fat Hiccup, and last week was major Demolition Zone. Okay, now that we’re all on the same page…let’s get after Week 4.

Let there be light!!

Hi Sugarplum |

We added additional overhead lighting with this aged brass drum pendant chandelier, and I’m already in love with the statement it makes in the room. We went with the largest size so it would really stand out once the shelves are finished and styled. I think it’s going to be exactly what the room needed to pull it all together and give it a center point.

Hi Sugarplum |

Hi Sugarplum |
Such a pretty pattern and glow at night!
Hi Sugarplum |

We also added additional light on the side wall with these classic aged brass sconces. This more affordable option was our first choice, but the aged brass was backordered past our deadline. Fortunately, Bellacor is one of our very generous sponsors! To simplify and minimize expense, we added just a single dimmer switch to operate both the sconces and pendant.

Hi Sugarplum |

Hi Sugarplum |

I’m dying to see the mirror in place, but I’m not taking the chance given all the construction still left to do!

Hi Sugarplum |

The rest of last week’s progress came in the form of beautiful deliveries….

Hi Sugarplum |
Chair | Floral Pillow | Buffalo Check Pillow

I also stumbled on what I hope will be the perfect side tables…and bonus they are 25% off with code FURNSHIP!

I fell down the rabbit-hole of art at Minted….and six episodes of How I Met Your Mother later, I finally chose the accent art for the room. I can’t wait to see it all framed and in-person… especially Miss Idalia.

And finally, the drapes arrived and are so gorgeous and flawlessly sewn!!!

Hi Sugarplum |

But of course I want to add a little something-something to them, and ordered these fun trims from DecoratorsBest. I’m waffling between two…which one gets your vote?

Hi Sugarplum |

{Project List}

Built-in Bookshelves // Frame the unit and add shelves & drawers
Lighting // DONE!
Drapes // Arrived & waiting for trim
Paint // Ready & impatiently waiting
Seating // DONE!
Rug & Textiles // Waiting for one more pillow
Floors // DONE!
Based on the list, it seems we’ve made progress…but I’m feeling really behind! Painting everything is going to be a big job, but I can’t start until the bookcase is framed, and the shelves and drawers are installed! Not to mention, my assistant is on a permanent labor strike.

Hi Sugarplum |

I believe everyone has at least one week in the ORC where things stall a bit…or at least I hope they do! This was that week for me. I feel like I was really busy and productive, yet I don’t have a lot to show for it. Hopefully that means next week is a doozy of progress! Oh Linda, what are the chances of getting an extension???

{One Room Challenge} Demolition Zone

October 21, 2015

Welcome back to Week 3 of the {One Room Challenge}! Before we dive in, I was glad to hear you loved yesterday’s Look for Less post! Nothing like the thrill of finding a great deal, right?!

Now…back to the Living Room. Thanks again to Linda for including me in this fun ride…I’m so excited about all the participant’s rooms, not to mention, love meeting the new readers that find their way here! #heyyall

Let’s recap for those popping in for the first time, we moved to a new house this year, and at this point, only the Kitchen and Master Bedroom are complete, and the Breakfast Room and Little Miss’s Room have been started. So we decided to tackle the first room you see when entering the house, the ‘formal’ Living Room. My goal was to create the feel of a jewel-box, with deep colors, lots of glam, and of course, an element of drama.

Week 1 I showed the Before shots and room layout, and last week was all about the Design, Plans, and a big fat Hiccup.

Okay, now that we’re all on the same page…let’s get after Week Three.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

That hiccup? Well, it resulted in three full days of chiseling, jackhammering, cutting and glueing. It wasn’t pretty or pleasant…but these poor guys got ‘er done, and the damaged floors were replaced. Which is actually fairly anti-climactic since we had new, dark hardwood floors to begin with.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

Remember that this room has the world’s largest wall, with not even a window to break it up? Okay, maybe not the world’s largest, but at 14-feet wide by 10-feet tall, it’s a big, blank span of wall. Our solution was to cover it wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, with built-in bookcases!

Reason #478 why I’m grateful to be working with a professional designer on this project…Kristin drew the detailed schematic of exactly what we wanted!

The bulk of the unit was built off-site, then once the floors were replaced, they installed the bases and frame in the room.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

They also patched the holes created from wiring the ceiling for a pendant light, and the wall for sconces.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

As long as the electrician was here and we were making messes, I had him add an outlet between the windows…this will be our first Christmas in this new house, and I think that might be the perfect spot for our tree.

And reason #318 I’m grateful for Kristin?? She suggested adding outlets to the toe-kick of the built-ins for lamps! #genius

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

In delivery news…it was a busy week for UPS and Fed Ex. I also can no longer walk in my Dining Room, which has become the holding zone for all the furniture and packages. #victim #sarcasm

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

The paint arrived, and I’ve never been so excited about paint, or painting, before in my life! I’ve always wanted to try Farrow & Ball paint! And since there is no VOC or smell, even the full gloss won’t be an issue. Any guesses where we’re using this color?

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

Another teaser…the most gorgeous rug that ever was arrived. And I’m not exaggerating. This time anyway.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

The pendant arrived, and I’m in love!! Except it’s the wrong finish. #oops But the people at Crystorama could not be nicer, and the correct one is already on the way!

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

{Project List}

Built-in Bookshelves // Bases & frame installed
Lighting // Wiring done
Drapes // Ordered
Paint // Ready & waiting
Seating // Ordered
Rug & Textiles // Rug arrived & pillows ordered
Floors // DONE!
Still so much to do, and we’re already at the halfway mark of this challenge! #gulp Thank goodness I have Kristin to hold my hand, because my assistant keeps falling asleep on the job.

Hi Sugarplum | One Room Challenge progress

Thanks so much for following along on this crazy-train with me!

{One Room Challenge} Here We Go Again!

October 7, 2015

Thanks for the love on yesterday’s style post, Work to Weekend. I hope you found some inspiration for mixing up your wardrobe a bit, especially for all those cute plaid tops!

Today kicks off week one of Calling It Home’s latest round of {One Room Challenge}, and I‘m thrilled to announce I’m participating again! I’m actually shocked, and quite flattered, that Linda invited me back!

For those of you not familiar, the ORC is an online event that brings together 20 bloggers with a love of design, and challenges them to transform a room from start to finish, while documenting the process along the way.

The kicker? We’ve only got six weeks to do it!! That’s about a tenth of the time it usually takes me to make over a room! I’ve been a huge fan and follower of the series for years, and was finally brave enough to take the challenge this past Spring with our Master Bedroom Makeover. It was a fun, crazed, panic-stricken few weeks, but exactly the kick-in-the-pants I needed to finally complete a room in this new house.

So let’s get to it…I waffled quite a bit as to which room to select this time…after all, I have a whole houseful of new spaces to design! (If you’re new to Hi Sugarplum!, you can read about this year’s unexpected move here.) At this point, only the Kitchen and Master Bedroom are complete, and the Breakfast Room and Little Miss’s Room have been started.

Ultimately, I decided on the room you see first upon walking in the front door, the most ‘formal’ of them all…the Living Room.

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before
I spy Maggie!

When we bought the house, it was hosed down in this yellowy-beige color, and the downstairs was a chopped-up mix of carpet and tile. I made these crude floor plans so you can get a better feel for the room…basically a box with a large opening and two windows.

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before

The ceilings are 10-feet, which I love, but also make for huge expanses of blank wall.

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before

The first thing we did was install hardwoods throughout the first floor, and paint the walls. I wasn’t sure yet what color I wanted the room, but I knew I wanted it changed…so we went with white for a clean slate.
And as you can see, the focal point of the room is a giant, 13-foot expanse of blank wall! Our last house had windows on every single wall, so filling a space this large was never an issue. Even the large hex-mirror (it’s 40-inches!) looked like a postage stamp on the wall.

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before
Here’s the room right after moving in, with all the furniture in place from our previous Living Room. The dimensions of this new Living Room are basically the opposite of our last one…so while some pieces fit, the overall look was jam-packed and cluttered.

Hi Sugarplum | ORC Living Room before

I was a little boggled by the space, and didn’t want to miss the boat on this room’s potential, so I recruited my crazy-talented friend, Kristin, to help me design it, and have a lot of fun along the way! Our design aesthetics are very similar, and I adore everything she does, so together we brainstormed what I hope will be a knock-out, jewel box of a Living Room!

Here’s some of the inspiration we pulled from…

I know that’s a hodgepodge of inspiration, but each contains something that will find it’s way to my room. Next week I’ll show you the design…and then ohemgee, it’s go time! I literally am still looking at the same space you see in this post…things have been ordered, but nothing has actually been done yet. #whatwasIthinking #whathaveIdone

Why did I think I could do this challenge now, with the HGTV cruise and holidays around the corner!?  But my name is on logo with all these talented friends, so there’s no backing out now! I can’t wait to share the progress and transformation, and hope you’ll follow along! And thanks again, Linda, for including me in this fabulous madness!

2016 | My Cup Runneth Over

January 6, 2017

Cheers to the first Friday of the New Year, friends! I hope the first week treated you well, and transitioning back to life as usual was a smooth one. I’ve been recapping the most popular projects and posts of last year…and there were a lot of them. But what made 2016 so unbelievably special was you…and the experiences and opportunities that came from your support, readership, comments, and genuine enthusiasm and encouragement.

While I tend to always be pushing forward, it’s key for me to slow down to fully acknowledge the blessings in my life…both big and small…so I can truly express my gratitude. In a world of endless To Do Lists, it’s easy for me to lose sight of what I’ve accomplished, so I hope you’ll indulge me one last recap post of 2016, sharing my personal highlights.

I always hesitate to write this post because it feels so horn-tooting, but this blog is my happy place…my own personal scrapbook and life’s chronicle…of not only what we do to our home, but what happens to the people in our home.

So this post is a combination of my own personal highlights from 2016, as well as the projects you made popular…along with some geeky by-the-numbers stuff. Basically all the good stuff that made 2016 grand for me, my family, and this little blog, all in one spot! If we don’t share DNA, you might want to skip it! 😉

*Recognitions*

We didn’t have any major photoshoots last year (unlike 2015! #toottoot), but the photos from this shoot lived on in several publications. The largest being a four-page spread in Better Home’s & Garden’s inaugural ‘I Did It’ issue!

I almost fell out of my chair when Traditional Home contacted me about being featured in their new digital magazine, Simply Perfect Kitchens & Baths. And to see my face in it is almost too much! It’s a gorgeous read, with tons of great inspiration…check out the full issue here.

Our previous Dining Room appeared in Family Circle as part of their ‘New Trends to Try’ story.

It was a fun surprise to see our last Living Room pop up in the ‘Pillow Talk’ story of Better Homes & Garden’s new special interest publication, Makeovers.

My jaw is still on the ground that Real Simple featured me as their spotlight blogger in a Summer issue, and called me ‘the best friend you always wanted.’ I’m pretty sure that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

I continue to be overwhelmed by the response to our Living Room from a previous One Room Challenge. As if it’s not treat enough to enjoy my morning coffee in this room, House Beautiful just named it one of their favorites from all 10 seasons of the ORC, and it made their #bestnine on Instagram again! #Icanteven

Women’s World magazine included me in their ‘Christmas Shortcuts’ article, featuring my tips for streamlining your holiday season.

And Relish Magazine (it’s a Sunday insert in major market newspapers) wrote about how to throw a Texas-style cookout…and I had the pleasure of being the resident Texan! #yall

*Opportunities*

I’m constantly amazed by the experiences and opportunities that come my way because of blogging. To me, I’m just sharing thoughts and ideas with friends on the internet everyday, so I’m beyond flattered when it leads to things like filming makeovers with Ikea, or hosting events at my favorite stores.

*Collaborations*

Since I think of you all as friends, I’m very choosy when it comes to recommending brands and products, and only collaborate with those I’d genuinely pass along to my mom or best friend. I know sponsored content is not always a reader-favorite, so I work extra hard to make those posts just as original and credible as non-sponsored posts. I was honored to work with these stellar brands last year.

*Stand-Out Personal Moments*

Between getting his driver’s permit and a full-blown Homecoming date, it’s safe to say our darling son is spreading his wings, and our years with him at home are dwindling. #sob As hard as it is to see him grow up, we couldn’t be more proud of the young man he’s becoming. I know the next few years will be so precious, and I’m excited for each new moment and experience.

I’m happy to buy supplies, make donations, and even work an occasional carnival booth, but I’m not the mom who volunteers to spearhead major events or lead committees. So no one was more shocked than me when I stepped outside my comfort zone and chaperoned the three-day overnight camp for fifth grade. It was one of the best things I did all year, and I’ll treasure that special time with our Little Miss forever.

Unfortunately, while at camp, our precious Maggie was bit by a venomous snake, and we had a scary 48-hours of waiting (with an even scarier vet bill!). She’s totally fine now, but it made us realize what a huge part of our family she is, and how completely attached we’ve become!

Our annual family vacation is always a highlight, especially when it’s with one of our favorite families!

Every moment of cruising the Mediterranean with my Mr. SP was a dream-come-true, and we never stopped pinching ourselves!

I loved the chance to get my darling Mama Sugarplum on the blog, in our Mother’s Day Tea post, and I treasure these pics of our three generations of ladies! I’m so excited that she’s agreed to appear more regularly in Dressing Room Diaries posts, too!

This Blogger Conference was really more of an excuse for a girl’s trip with my favorite blogger friends, and one of the most fun weekends of my year.

I don’t know what I liked more on our Big Sky trip…spending time with my darling brother and sister (and new brother-in-law), or watching my kids learn to ski with patience and courage!

*Most Comments*

My favorite part of blogging is the interactions with you. Every time I hit ‘publish’ on a post I wonder what you’ll think, and am always surprised by your response. The number of comments and reactions to these posts really blew me away!

Since we’re all friends here, it’s only natural I ask your opinion on life’s really perplexing issues…like kitchen tile and which dress to pack! 😉 I love hearing your feedback and ideas, and would love to find a way to have more circular conversations with y’all this year!

Some posts take on a life of their own, and I really have no idea why one project resonates more than another…but these posts (along with the most commented ones) received more views than any others in 2016. And according to pageviews, Dressing Room Diaries and Sugarplum Style posts are the most popular of my regular series posts.

*Numbers*

It’s fun for me to see who you are, and where you’re coming from, according to Google Analytics:

*More than a million of you stopped by at least once last year & read over 10 million pages.
I can’t even wrap my head around that!?!
*Most of you are American, but Canadians & Britons are a pretty close second.
There are even people reading from the United Arab Emirates!?
*95% female, aged 25-44…but the 45-64 bracket is catching up.
Which also means 5% of you reading are men. #hmmm
*Phones & tablets took over as the most popular way to read
* I wrote 204 blog posts & published over 4,000 comments.

More than half of you are referred here from other sites…so thank you to these amazing bloggers who so generously share my projects and include me in their blogrolls. Without them and Pinterest, I’d likely be writing to just my mom and aunt each day.

Megan at Honey We’re Home
Shay at Mix and Match Mama
Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick
Sheaffer at Sheaffer Told Me To
Linda at Calling It Home
Kristin at Hunted Interior

That said, the majority of the amazing opportunities that come my way, are because of you, darling readers…I know without your support, enthusiasm, kindness, and interactions, none of this would be possible. I can’t thank you enough for popping in every day, week, month, or leap year…whenever it is, I’m thrilled you stopped by! Even the lurkers…I know you’re there!

I know this post was a lot of toot-tooting my own horn, so thank you for indulging me. God has blessed me more than I could have ever imagined, and I’m beyond humbled by your friendship, support and kind words. With all my heart, thank you. #grouphug

Your encouragement makes me excited to continue doing what I love so much. Starting this blog was the best whim I’ve ever acted on, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. This year has already started with a bang, and I’m excited to share all the ideas and projects with you, starting with a big update on Monday! I pray 2017 is your best yet, lovebugs!
