Dressing Room Diaries

May 4, 2018

Cheers to Friday, friends! I am so excited to have a no-plans weekend ahead! After the last few weeks, my body is telling me to slow the freak down, so I’ve got big plans for take-out and Netflix binging. What’s on your agenda?

Today I’ve got a new Dressing Room Diaries for you…and you know the drill, I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. The shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it’s expiration, and many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

Bonus! Most everything is either on super sale, or earns triple points!

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-isa (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0.

I wish my photo were a better depiction of color, because this striped camisole is Summer perfection! It’s the best shade of navy and bright red, with a cute cut-out on the back, and nice drapey fit. I’d dress it up for a night out, pair it with cut-offs, and everything in-between!

Fit Tip: My store was sold out of XS, so I’m wearing a small…but needed the XS.

Striped Camisole (40% off!) | White Jeans | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’

Another darling camisole, this one with the cutest scallop edge and deep v-neck. It’s shorter than the striped camisole, but definitely long enough for a half-tuck. I’d wear it alone for a night out, or under a blazer for work.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a US4, which fits like a 0-2.

Scalloped Camisole (triple points!) | White Jeans | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’

My obsession with feminine details continues with this peplum shirt with sweetest ruffle sleeve trim. The material is a crisp cotton poplin, and a great lightweight for hotter months.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, but if you have a long torso, this one might be too short-waisted for you.

Ruffle Sleeve Peplum Shirt | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

Stripes + fringe! This pullover knit sweater is a combo of ivory and navy, and the fringe trim gives it that special touch. It’s soft and light, but still fairly thick.

Fit tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Sleeveless Sweater with Fringe Trim | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

I adore the slight cap-sleeves of this crisp popover top with contrasting stripe pattern. It has a rounded hem for wearing untucked, but is long enough to tuck, as well. The material is a light cotton poplin, and the shirt takes on a different feel just by unbuttoning it.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Cap-Sleeve Striped Top | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

I loved the concept of this butterfly top…the full, flutter sleeves and pom-pom trim…but it’s just a bit too short on my longer torso. The cotton is breezy light, and super soft.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing XS.

Pom Trim Breezy Top | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

It may be getting warmer, but I still reach for lightweight pullovers…especially in restaurants and movie theaters! #brrr This classic lightweight sweatshirt takes it up a notch with the cutest contrasting gingham cuffs. You can wear them down like this, or cuffed and tied. It comes in several colors, but I’m partial to this navy and gingham combo.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Contrasting Cuff Bow Sweatshirt (triple points!) | White Jeans | Loafers

All the sass of an off-the-shoulder top, while wearing your traditional bra! This cute cold-shouldered top is made of a soft jersey knit, with embroidered accent. The black and white make it great for dressing up for a night out, but still casual enough for shorts and jeans.

Fit Tip: I’d size down in this one, I’m wearing an XS and the sleeves felt too slouchy.

Cold-Shoulder Embroidered Top (40% off!) | White Jeans | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’ | Hoop Earrings

You’ve seen this perfect tank before, but since I couldn’t resist grabbing another color, I figured I’d better show you again! It’s the best lightweight slub cotton with flattering arm and v-neck, and even a little front pocket. It’s a great mid-length, too.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

V-Neck Whisper Tank | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

Yep, my collection of perfect tanks for Summer. I’ll wear them tucked into skirts, with jeans and shorts, and under jackets.

V-Neck Whisper Striped Tank  | Cut-Off Shorts | V-Neck Whisper Solid Tank | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’ | Cropped Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

Let’s move on to bottoms…starting with these poplin joggers. They’re a super lightweight cotton, but not too thin, with a comfy wide elastic and drawstring waist. The hem is cuffed for your preferred length, and they sit lower on your hips.

Fit Tip: I was between an XS and small…you want these to fit loose, so I’d size up if you’re in-between. These are XS, and they were pulling a tad across the bum, but likely would have stretched out.

Scoopneck Tee | Jogger-Style Pants (40% off!) | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’

I actually grabbed these shorts for the Gibson x Hi Sugarplum shoot last weekend, and styled them with a relaxed tee and wedge sandals. I love the thick cotton twill for extra support, and the high-waist for a dressier feel. With a shirt tucked in, they give you legs for days. And hello darling scallop edge!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a size 0

V-Neck Whisper Tank | Scallop Edge Shorts | Embroidered Sandals

These shorts were an automatic YES as soon as I pulled them on! They hang beautifully thanks to the linen blend, and the embroidery gives them a polished look. The elastic waistband is comfy with an adjustable drawstring, and the shallow pockets prevent added bulk on the sides. The tee is super soft and so cute with the ruffle sleeve. And on sale for $15!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS short, and the tee is a small, but I needed an XS.

Ruffle Sleeve Tee | Embroidered Shorts (40% off!) | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’

This colorful cover-up has me dreaming of a return trip to Maroma!! So fun layered over a swimsuit, and of course a market tote and hat!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a S/M

Embellished Cover-Up | Flip Flop | Market Tote | Pom Pom Bag Charm

I’m a sucker for an easy t-shirt dress in warmer months, and this one is a keeper! I love the longer sleeve and stripe, but it’s the back that sealed the deal. It’s a thick terrycloth-lined cotton, so nothing shows through, and I love it with sandals or sneakers. I’d even throw it on over a swimsuit.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small, but need an XS.

Striped T-Shirt Dress (triple points!)

Moving on to my favorite category…dresses! This wrap has a flattering silhouette with cute ruffle trim. I love the longer sleeves for offsetting the shorter hemline, and it’s cute dressed down with flat sandals, or jazzed-up a bit with wedges and fun accessories.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small.

Polka Dot Linen Wrap Dress (triple points!) | Slide Sandals

I love the seersucker print and crisp cotton of this dress, but the cut-out is a little too exposed for my comfort zone. The full skirt and longer hemline offset it a bit..and hello pockets!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2.

Seersucker Cut-Out Dress

This dress is a little more my speed, with the halter-style neckline and ruffle skirt. It has a high-low hemline and open back. The material is a crisp heavy cotton, and the belt is removable. It would be cute with colorful earrings and a straw bag, or dressed up with heels.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but the fabric overwhelmed my frame a bit, so a petite would probably fit better.

Halter Style Sundress with High-Low Hem (triple points!)

This textured dress has a thick sturdy feel, with a hint of stretch for a comfy fit. I love the flattering fit-and-flare silhouette and shoulder line.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular XS.

Fit-and-Flare Dress (40% off!) | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’ | Hoop Earrings

This swing dress is a soft jersey knit that falls away from the body without clinging. The trim on the shoulder is a sweater knit material, and holds its shape for a fun, full ruffle.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Ruffle Sleeve Shift Dress (40% off!) | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’ | Hoop Earrings

The perfect dress for Summer weddings, showers, parties…all of it! It’s fully lined with a ruffle hem and halter-style neckline. It’s the prettiest shade of dark pink, and easily dresses up or down with flat or heeled sandals.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0.

Striped Halter Style Dress (triple points!) | Flat Sandals in ‘Makeup’

And finally, let’s wrap this DRD up with these pink seersucker pajamas…the same ones from my Puppy Update post! Lightweight, crisp cotton and drawstring shorts, with the cutest piped collar. They’re a little sheer, but not so much you’re exposed. Plus, they’re 65% off!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Seersucker Pajama Set (65% off!)

Okay, that’s it for today! I do hope you found it helpful, and maybe discovered some new goodies and styling ideas! And be sure to check previous Dressing Room Diaries because many of the items are now on sale!

Dressing Room Diaries

April 20, 2018

Cheers to Friday, friends! I headed out for a blogger conference yesterday…aka, a girl’s weekend with some of my favorite blogger babes! I packed a bevy of Spring dresses, so of course a major cold front is now blowing in! Along with a monsoon of rain. This should be interesting! (Follow along on Instagram to see peeks of the fun & what I packed!)

Today I’ve got a new Dressing Room Diaries for you…and you know the drill, I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you. The shots aren’t good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it’s expiration, and many of the items aren’t a good fit for me…but it’s real life, real girl, real clothes…and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries

Fit Note: I’m 5’4″-ish, 120 pounds-isa (depending on the week’s taco count), with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0.

I wore this striped sweater on my Instagram Story this week, and had a flood of requests for a link, so I’m assuming y’all will like it as much as I do! It’s a lightweight knit with a button detail on the back. The material is soft and stretchy, and looks cute worn out, or tucked in to a skirt for a dressier look.

Fit Tip: I sized up for a more relaxed, casual fit.

Sweater | High Rise Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

It’s hard to see the details of this black top in the pic, but it’s a mock-wrap style with flattering tie and slight peplum hem. The material is a crisp cotton poplin, and a style that’s easily dressed up or down. The ruffle sleeve is slightly exaggerated, but creates an hourglass shape. It would be so chic with a pencil skirt!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a size 2.

Wrap-Style Top (30% off!) | High Rise Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

One of my favorite finds this week, this tee has a cotton knit body and crisp poplin sleeve. It takes a basic tee up a notch and gives a casual combo extra style.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small because that’s all my store had in stock, but I promptly ordered an XS!

Flutter Top | High Rise Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

This top is the trifecta of cute tops…peplum hem, flutter sleeves, and stripes! Unfortunately it runs a little large, and the XS was too big for me.

Fit Tip: Definitely size down on this one.

Striped Peplum Top | White Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

This top is a blend of cottons, as well…knit body and crisp poplin ruffle sleeves. It’s so cute with jeans, shorts and skirts, but also runs big.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, so size down.

Ruffle Sleeve Tee | White Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

There’s no question I’m a Nordy Girl! #teamNordy I love this collection of graphic tees…each with fun phrases and designs. Plus the cotton is crazy soft, with a longer length.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, so size down if you prefer it fitted.

Nordy Girl Tee | White Jeans | Sandals | Earrings

I’m a sucker for a one-shoulder top, especially when a ruffle is included. This striped black and white top is a drapey material that hangs nicely, and a comfy elastic band. I just wish it were a bit longer.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

One Shoulder Top | White Jeans | Sandals

Black and white gingham is everywhere this season (I’m partial to this one!), and I couldn’t be happier! This top is a crisp material with slight bell sleeves and a wide elastic smocking across the full chest. It’s a flattering off-the-shoulder fit, and does a good job of actually staying put. You can’t beat the price, either!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Gingham Ruffled Top | Distressed-White Jeans | Wedges | Earrings | Watch

I think I shared this tank in a previous post, but I’m so smitten with it I grabbed more colors. It’s the perfect v-neck with a slight racerback shoulder (but not enough to require a special bra). The cotton is soft, but not sheer, and the pocket elevates the tee a bit.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, I’m in an XS.

V-Neck Tank | High Rise Jeans | Embroidered Sandals

This tee just makes me happy…the bright blue, the happy words, and soft cotton. The shorts are a great mid-rise with slightly longer inseam. There’s no holes or distressing, so you don’t have to worry about anything falling out! They come in several rinses, but I’m partial to the white and these light wash.

Fit Tip: Both are true to size, I’m wearing an XS and 26, respectively.

“On the Bright Side” Tee | Shorts | Embroidered Sandals

It may be a chilly Spring, but Summer is coming…and if you’re in the South with me, you know shorts are essential. These linen shorts have a wide elastic waist with drawstring and deep pockets…and pretty much perfect. These are the shorts you buy in every color, and wear every weekend. I paired them with my fave pocket tank.

Fit Tip: This is the XS, which I was concerned might be a little snug through the thigh (you want these to hang away from the body), but after wearing them for a bit, they stretched out perfectly. So I’d say they’re true to size.

Linen Shorts | V-Neck Tank | Embroidered Sandals

Here’s the same shorts, but a size small. I like the added length and fullness through the legs.

Fit Tip: The drawstring waist gives a more custom fit, so size up if you like the longer length and fuller fit.

Linen Shorts | V-Neck Tank | Embroidered Sandals

Now let’s move on to dresses, and I found some fun ones! Starting with this flirty floral shift with flutter sleeves and hem. The print is a combo of pretty blues, greens and citrus hues. It’s fully-lined and perfect for work, or dress it down with a jean jacket and flat sandals.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2p for a shorter length. The regular 0 had a similar fit, but longer hem.

Flowerbed Swing Dress | Sandals

This one had me at stripes, and fits like a glove. The material is a thick, stretchy crepe, but feels a bit like a thick knit. It hugs the figure through the torso, but has a flattering fit-and-flare shape. You could wear it with flats, wedges or even sneakers.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0.

Striped Fit and Flare Dress

This polka-dot number is so cute and preppy, and perfect for day parties or work. I’d add colorful shoes and accessories, or even a jean jacket.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0

Polka Dot Dress | Sandals

I love the plaid print and ruffle trim of this dress, and the flattering tie wrap. Unfortunately it runs a little big and overwhelmed my frame. But it’s darling with both flat sandals and wedges.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0.

Ruffle and Bow Dress | Sandals

I adore the floral print of this fit-and-flare dress, and exaggerated full skirt! It’s so feminine and flattering, with a stiff taffeta-style material. The back dips down for a peek of skin, but not so much you need special undergarments. So pretty for Summer weddings and parties.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but petite sizing is available.

Floral Flare Dress | Sandals

This pretty maxi has a muted floral print in shades of pink and moss, with a flattering halter-style neckline and pleated skirt. It’s fully-lined with a sash tie at the neck, and can be casual with flat sandals, or dressed up with heels and jewels. And the price can’t be beat!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 0.

Floral Maxi Dress

You’ve seen this dress a few times over the years, it’s such a showstopper with the lace overlay and figure-hugging fit. This new orchid color is perfect for Spring, and gives the dress a softer look. The lace is really substantial with some give, so it forms to your shape.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small in this pic, but it’s loose across the chest and stomach. I’d stick with my usual XS for this one, but know it will be fitted.

Lace Midi Dress

Now let’s move on to comfier finds…pajamas! And hello pink gingham! This set seriously could not be any cuter, and the shorts even have pockets! The cotton is a little sheer, so undies will show through unless you’re wearing a nude shade. But who cares when you’re at home, right?!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Gingham Pajama Set

I’ve been a fan of Barefoot Dreams for years…in fact I think I own every style of cardigan they make (this hooded one is my fave). So how did I not know they make a robe?!?! And not just any robe, but a robe made of the same softer-than-soft material of their cardigans and blankets. It has a magical way of being soft, cozy and warm, without being too heavy or hot. Perfect for evenings over your PJs, and mornings with the hair dryer. And bonus, it’s 50% off!!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Robe

Okay, that’s it for today! I do hope you found it helpful, and maybe discovered some new goodies and styling ideas! And be sure to check previous Dressing Room Diaries because many of the items are now on sale!

What’s your favorite from this round of Dressing Room Diaries? Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Dressing Room Diaries

April 6, 2018

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends! I can’t even begin to describe what your overwhelming response to yesterday’s big announcement means to me! Y’all are always nothing but encouraging, but you completely blew me away with the comments and emails on the blog and across all my social channels. I am thrilled to know you share my excitement, and humbled beyond words at your support and kind words. Hurry up, May 29!

Let’s mix things up and start this week’s DRD with tops…because Spring is all about the statement top. And it doesn’t get any cuter than a one-shoulder ruffle, unless maybe it’s a one-shoulder ruffle with stripes! This breezy top is a lightweight linen blend, but doesn’t become a wrinkled mess the moment you slip it on. The stripe is charcoal and white, so would look great with any shade of denim, and of course a statement earring. I prefer one-shoulder tops over a full off-the-shoulder, since it wears like a regular shirt and gives you full arm mobility.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, and there’s plenty of room for a larger chest. 😉 The jeans are my fave white distressed, but size down because they’re extra stretchy.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
One-Shoulder Ruffle Top | Distressed White Jeans | Wedges | Hoop Earrings

If you prefer off-the-shoulder, this one feels like your favorite cotton tee, but wears like a sassy blouse. The elastic is wide and comfortable, and I adore the little ruffle trim around the top. The sleeves are drawstring, so you can tighten them to any spot on your arm. The shorts are the best I’ve found for white cut-offs…mid rise with longer inseam, and super soft and comfy.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS top and 26 shorts.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Off-the-Shoulder Striped Shirt | White Jean Shorts | Flat Sandals  | Tassel Necklace

I know this tank doesn’t look like much, but I promise it’s one of those that you’ll reach for regularly this Summer. I wear them with jeans, shorts, skirts…it’s cute worn out, half tucked, and even knotted. Plus it has the perfect amount of v-neck, and a super soft fabric. I’m grabbing several colors while it’ 30% off!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS, and it has great drape.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
V-Neck Tank (also here) | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

I love the idea behind this top, but unfortunately it was a bit sheer for my comfort zone. The ruffle details and peplum hem are super fun and flattering, and the eyelet pattern perfect for Summer. These jeans, however, are my hands-down faves for white jeans!! Perfectly opaque, no-show pockets, and great ankle length.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS top, but size down in the jeans.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Ruffle Eyelet Top | Tassel Earrings | White Ankle Jeans | Flat Sandals

I was hesitant about this vibrant yellow on me, but I actually liked it! I’m sure my self-tanner helped! (See my tips for self-tanner in this post.) It’s a lightweight cardigan, perfect for throwing a sundress or tank, and comes in the best striped combos, plus some solids. I wish I’d remembered to take the sweater off for one pic…the tank is a darling racerback-style with flattering high neck and slim fit.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a S sweater, but needed an XS. The tank is fitted, so size up if you prefer a little more room.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Striped Cardigan | High Neck Tank | Tassel Earrings | White Ankle Jeans | Flat Sandals

Obviously I’m a Nordy Girl…and not just because they’re carrying my Gibson x Hi Sugarplum Collection, launching May 29. 😉 Ha! I’m joking, I promise not to inundate you with shameless self-promotion. Much. This preppy sweatshirt comes in this fun blush and green combo, and also pink and navy…perfectly preppy! It’s fairly lightweight and slightly cropped.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
‘Nordy Girl’ Sweatshirt | Tassel Earrings | White Ankle Jeans | Flat Sandals

Is there anything preppier than pink and green? This knit pullover has the cutest contrasting trim around the collar, and buttons up the back. It comes in the cutest colors and stripes, too. You could easily pair it with skirts and pants for work, or dress it down with jeans and shorts. The material is really soft and lightweight, this blush color is a tad sheer.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Contrasting Trim Sweater | Tassel Earrings | White Ankle Jeans | Flat Sandals

Eyelet is obviously the pattern of the season, it’s just everywhere right now! This fun off-the-shoulder has the cutest peplum hem and ruffled sleeves. The elastic is wide and comfortable across the shoulders, and stays in place.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Off-the-Shoulder Eyelet Top | Tassel Earrings | White Ankle Jeans | Flat Sandals

Well this is embarrassing…the eyelet obsession continues. Obviously I kept this one since you saw it in last week’s Sugarplum Style post! I couldn’t resist the bell sleeve and pullover swing style. I do layer a nude cotton cami underneath.

Fit Tip: It runs a tad big, I’m in an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Eyelet Bell Sleeve Popover | Jeweled Hoop Earrings | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

Moving on to bottoms…I might have squealed when I spotted these gingham pants! They are a thick, sturdy cotton with a hefty amount of stretch…making them both comfy, and flattering. The wide band hugs with waist with no gapping, and the cropped length is perfect for sandals and wedges.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, which felt a little tight when I first pulled them on, but they quickly formed to my figure.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Scoop neck Tee | Gingham Stretch Pants | Jeweled Hoop Earrings | Flat Sandals

I used to have a large collection of shorts, but in recent years have started migrating more to skirts. They just feel more polished and flattering. This denim skirt has a chic length, but the front slit keeps it flirty and young. It’s high waisted, too, so it really elongates your legs when worn with a shirt tucked. The tee has a fun stripe, and fringe detail on the sleeve.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg 0 skirt, and XSP tee, but needed a regular XS (hence why the sleeves look too short).

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Striped Tee with Fringe | Jean Skirt (40% off!) | Jeweled Hoop Earrings | Flat Sandals

Speaking of perfectly preppy…how about these tie-waisted shorts? I’ll admit I raised an eyebrow when I saw them, but did a little dressing room dance once I got them on. (Dancing is always the dressing room indicator of how much you like something!) I love them with a fitted tee to balance the fullness of the shorts, and this one has a chic longer sleeve.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2 in the shorts (so they’d sit lower on my hips), and an XS tee. The tee runs fitted, so size up if you’re busty.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Striped Perfect Tee | Tie-Front Pleated Shorts | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

I’m all about the jogger pant lately…they’re like fashion’s permission to wear pajamas in public! These are a little long on me, but I love the wide waistband and relaxed fit through the legs. The olive color is a great neutral, but they come in others, as well. The ankle band is soft and stretchy, too.

Fit Tip: I’m in a regular XS, but obviously need to size down or go with petite.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
V-Neck Pocket Tee | Linen Jogger Pants | Flat Sandals

Up next I’ve got two darling striped t-shirt dresses for you…both equally cute, but it’s likely one is more your style than the other. This short-sleeve dress has a little drawstring detail on the sleeve, soft lightweight cotton, and shorter length. It’s a great throw on with flat sandals or sneakers, and even over a swimsuit.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Striped T-Shirt Dress with Cinched Sleeves | Tassel Necklace | Flat Sandals

This dress is more of a swing shape, with fitted shoulders and a-line hem. The material is an extra-thick cotton knit, that’s both soft and drapey. It laces up the back with a wide ribbon and tie, and obviously we’re suckers for the pockets! It’s definitely longer, so you could pair it with wedges, as well as flat sandals and sneakers.

Fit Tip: It’s true to size, but generous, I’m wearing an XS.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Striped Swing Dress | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

Let’s get sassy for a second, with this subtly sexy ruched number. It’s part of my friend, Erin’s line she created with Gibson for Spring, and a total winner. The material is the softest jersey knit, but thick enough to conceal lumps and bumps. The ruching creates a flattering hourglass shape, while hiding imperfections. The material allows it to be worn casually with sandals, but the silhouette makes it easy to dress up for a night out.

Fit Tip: It runs large, I’m wearing a regular XS, but need to size down, or go to petite for a little shorter length.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
Jersey Knit Ruched Dress

Now let’s talk party dresses…because ’tis the season! With the high neck, halter neckline, and sheath shape, this thick knit is effortlessly chic. It even has bold statement buttons on the back to dress it up a notch. You could totally dress it up with heels for an evening event, or dress it down for more casual styles.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0.

hi sugarplum dressing room diaries
High Neck Sheath Dress | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

That floral print! Those ruffle sleeves! And hello, pockets! This darling dress just screams garden party. It’s constructed from a really sturdy cotton, with just a touch of stretch, for a well-tailored fit. It’s midi length, but easily shortened if you prefer closer to the knee. The colors are a stunning mix of navy, pink, green and orange.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing regular 0.

Floral Midi Dress | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

This strapless midi dress is party-perfect with a taffeta-style fabric, flattering fit-and-flare shape, and fun bow detail on the chest. The top has built-in cups for more shape and support, too.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0 and it’s a tad big across the chest.

Strapless Midi Dress | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

This solid navy is similar to the floral midi, but it’s a crisp cotton poplin, giving it a more casual feel. You could totally wear it for work though! It has the same darling ruffle sleeves and feminine shape.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing regular 0.

Midi Dress with Flutter Sleeve | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

This navy number is the epitome of a perfect dress for me…fit-and-flare shape, pockets, and knee-length. To top it off, it has an amazing ruffle collar that’s permanently popped #swoon, and halter-style shoulder line!! I mean really, could it be an more flattering or chic?! The material is a crisp cotton poplin, that’s fully lined, with a ruffle hem. It pairs well with wedges, strappy heels or flat sandals, and that collar is just begging for an up-do.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0.

Belted Dress with High Neck | Tassel Earrings | Flat Sandals

Clearly I have this thing for girly details…and this dress doesn’t disappoint. Flutter sleeves create a soft line round the shoulder, balanced by a slight ruffle at the hem. The tie-belt is removable, but creates such a flattering waistline. The material is thick with a touch of stretch, and perfect for work or nights out.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but also liked the shorter hem of a 2p (but it wasn’t office-appropriate for me).

Ruffle Trim Flutter Dress | Jeweled Hoop Earrings | Flat Sandals

Okay, wrapping this DRD installment with the world’s cutest jumpsuit! I’ve been on the hunt for one this Spring, and now I know the others didn’t work because I was obviously waiting for this one! It’s a linen-blend fabric that feels like a thick chambray, with a darling racerback neckline and open back. The legs are perfectly wide without overwhelming my frame, and the crotch miraculously not too low! #hammertime I swooned and danced and did all the dressing room theatrics for this one!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Dressing Room Diaries, Spring & Summer

Dressing Room Diaries

March 23, 2018

Cheers to Friday, friends! I’m spending the next couple of days in Austin, soaking up as much knowledge as possible at a blogging conference. (Follow along on Instagram Stories to see peeks of the fun.) You’d think after almost eight years of blogging, I’d know #allthethings, but not surprisingly, most of the info is flying over my head. For a job that’s so much fun, there’s a shocking number of things that go on behind the scenes. But that’s another post for another day.

Thanks so much for the love on this week’s posts! We started the week with a round-up of favorite Spring Sandals and 15 Ways to Wear a Military Jacket, and yesterday was all about my Evening Skincare Routine. I’m thrilled you liked the posts, and I always love hearing your feedback and comments! (You can sign up for my daily posts and weekly newsletter here…so you never miss a post!)

Today I’ve got a new Dressing Room Diaries with my cute Mama Sugarplum…and you know the drill, I hunt down some of the cutest new arrivals from my favorite retailers, and review them for you.

Mama Sugarplum is 5’1″, with an hourglass figure. We typically wear the same size, but she sometimes goes with petite.

Let’s kick today’s DRD off with dresses…always my favorite category! This dress combines so many of my favorite elements in a dress…ruffles, a-line shape, and defined waist. The chambray material is a thick, but soft, chambray, with a partial wrap-style for a flattering fit at the waist. It’s a little short, so I’d probably stick with flat sandals, but it will be so fun to style with different earrings and bags.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS. If you’re broad shouldered, or busty, you might size up one.

Ruffle Wrap Dress | Sandal | Hoop Earrings

Did you realize Easter is next weekend? Yep, it comes early this year! This pink gingham would be perfect…great knee length and modest fit, with the cutest pattern and fit-and-flare shape. The top is fully-lined, but the skirt is thick enough to not need lining or a slip. It has great movement, and is a steal! It’s super cute with a jean jacket and straw bag, too. The shoes come in a slew of fun colors and have a comfy block heel.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2P…I went with petite sizing for a shorter length, and sized up one to accommodate for the petite.

Gingham Fit-and-Flare Dress | Sandals (tons of colors!) | Hoop Earrings

This ruffle dress is a great option for Easter and all your Spring showers and parties. Love the periwinkle blue, and the ruffle creates a flattering silhouette and makes the skirt extra flirty. It’s a thick, stretchy polyester that skims the body without hugging too much.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2.

Ruffle Dress | Nude Sandals | Hoop Earrings

Ignore my dirty mirror and crazy dog…I’m completely smitten with this one-shoulder jumpsuit! In fact, you’ll see it styled on the blog next week for Day and Night. The one-shoulder shows just enough skin to be sassy, but not enough to feel exposed for most occasions. It’s a thick, lined crepe material that moves beautifully, and the tie accents the waist. And let’s not overlook the pockets! The top is fitted, and the legs flare out a bit with a cropped length.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but it comes in petite sizing too. I tried a petite, but it was too high-waisted for my frame.

One-Shoulder Jumpsuit | Heels | Earrings

With all my being I wanted to love this striped jumpsuit, but alas I don’t think it’s meant for me. It’s a crisp cotton poplin with halter neckline. I mean, the bow, the pockets, the stripes…I love everything about it! Maybe it’s just too long for me…but someone taller please get this and let me live vicariously through you!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0. I’m tempted to try again and pin the length shorter to see if it’s better!

Striped Tie-Back Jumpsuit | Wedges

Clearly I’m having a blue moment, or maybe it’s just the color of Spring. Either way, it’s a good thing because everyone looks good in blue. This dress has a subtle fit-and-flare shape, with sturdy lace overlay. I love the ruffle detail on the sleeve and hem. I’d probably do a more delicate shoe…this wedge feels a little heavy for the lace. But I’d certainly wear it with my fave flat sandals!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0.

Lace Overlay Dress | Wedges

Another fun gingham option…this one in a heavier tweed material, and fully lined (making it a little heavy). I do love the deep blue and white gingham, and the slight racerback arm is crazy flattering.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a regular 0, but would like it shortened a couple of inches.

Gingham Tweed Dress | Wedges | Earrings

The same tweed gingham material, but in a darling sleeveless top with fringe trim!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Gingham Tweed Top | Distressed Jeans | Wedges | Earrings

Oh look, here’s my darling Mama Sugarplum in the top! She’s bustier than I am, and would prefer it in a small.

Gingham Tweed Dress | Gingham Tweed Top | Wedges | Earrings | Dark Skinnies (40% off!) | Platform Espadrilles

Now let’s move on to tops, starting with this fun swing tank. It’s the softest brushed fleece material with a subtle bell shape and fun movement. I love the angled hem and longer back (covers the bum!). It’s a great top for jeans, shorts and denim skirts. Makes a cute half-tuck, too.

Fit tip: I’m wearing XS.

High-Low Swing Top | Distressed Jeans | Wedges

This sweatshirt accompanied me to West Texas, and it was a great breezy top (I paired it with denim shorts). It’s a lightweight, terrycloth front, with full poplin eyelet back. But somehow, I can still wear a regular bra without it showing in the back! The shoulders are dropped and it’s a relaxed fit.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Eyelet Sweatshirt | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

Love the sassy cold shoulder paired with the sporty stripe of this linen-blend top. You get all the fun of off-the-shoulder, without having to worry about the top slipping…and works with a traditional bra! It’s a tad cropped, so if you’re long-torsoed, you may want to skip it.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS.

Striped Top | White Ankle Skinny Jeans | Flat Sandals

I was so excited to try this top…the stripe + the graphic embellishment! Boden makes one of my fave striped cotton tees, but this one is a thinner, stretchier version than their original. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but the graphic is actually grosgrain ribbon sewn on in accordion folds.

Fit Tip: It runs really small, I’m wearing a 4, and it was still too small. So I’d size up 2 from your traditional US sizing.

Graphic Striped Tee | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

This tiered tunic is an incredibly versatile top that works with everything from jeans to shorts to slacks for work. It’s a swingy, crepe material with asymmetrical hem and roll-tab sleeves. It’s part of my friend Erin at Living in Yellow’s collection, and I’m so excited for her…the pieces are all so good!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a reg XS, but it does run a little big.

Tiered Tunic Blouse | Distressed Skinny Jeans | Wedges | Hoop Earrings

I can just hear my Mom gasping over this top…it’s so her!! It couldn’t be any more perfect for Spring, right?! The bright shades of green and fun floral embellishments make it darling with jeans, pants or skirts. I love the longer arms and contrasting collar color. It’s a soft, stretchy merino knit, but not sheer.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing XS.

Striped Embellished Sweater | Distressed Skinny Jeans | Flat Sandals | Hoop Earrings

Mom insisted we try these pants (she has a thing for dots), and we both thought they were so darling. They’e a thick stretchy material that go on tight in the beginning, then form to your shape after a few deep squats. (You know the routine!) The top is a crisp poplin with fun ruffle neck, and long enough to tuck.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a 2 pant and XS top.

Ruffle Neck Top | Polka Dot Stretch Pants | Wedges | Earrings

Mom sized up to a 4 in the pants, and went with petite for an ankle length. Her top is an XS.

Ruffle Neck Top | Polka Dot Stretch Pants | Earrings | Flat Sandals | Wedges

Another fun top, this tee has an asymmetrical peplum hem and cute crewneck shape. The material is a thick, stretchy waffle knit.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing an XS…the peplum is a little short for my longer torso, and Mom would have preferred sizing up for more room across the chest.

Asymmetrical Flounce Tee | Distressed White Jeans | Wedges | Dark Skinnies (40% off!) | Platform Espadrilles

Let’s first stop to look at Mama Sugarplum’s cuteness! Okay, now let’s talk about her little bomber…it’s a perfect lightweight knit for Spring, giving you the look and style of a jacket, but only the weight of a cotton top. The material is soft, but really textured for a fun layer.

Fit Tip: She’s wearing a small for more relaxed fit.

Lightweight Woven Bomber Jacket | Dark Skinnies (40% off!) | Platform Espadrilles

I’m on a graphic tee kick lately, and this blush pink is a fun option for Summer. It’s a thick, sturdy cotton with oversized fit. The pants have an exposed hem and ankle length, with cargo-style pockets. They come in a bunch of colors and are the perfect weight for warmer months.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a small tee (but need an XS), and size 26 pants. They have a bit of stretch, so give to your shape after a bit.

Graphic Tee | Raw Hem Cargo Pants | Flat Sandals | Earrings

Another graphic tee, this one in a super-soft cotton with long sleeves and front pocket. Now every day can be Friday! These are the same pants as above, but in white. They are a great opaque material, and not sheer.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS tee and 26 pant.

Graphic Tee | Raw Hem Cargo Pants | Flat Sandals | ‘Friday’ Tee | Wedges

I was a little confused by this tee on the hanger, and then loved it on! It’s fairly long, but scrunches up with surprisingly flattering side ruching. The sleeve is a bit longer than a cap sleeve and the v-neck doesn’t overexpose.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS tee.

Ruched Tee | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals | Earrings

I love lightweight cardigans during the warmer months, because even if it’s toasty outside, it’s always freezing indoors! This cardi is a soft, lightweight knit with a boyfriend fit. I love the larger pockets, too. It comes in a ton of colors, and even stripes.

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS in both the cardigan and boatneck tee.

Knit Cardigan | Ballet Neck Tee | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

Another great lightweight cardigan option, this one longer with a linen-blend. The fine gauge fabric keeps it from being bulky or overwhelming shorter frames. It was part of my travel outfit last week, and kept me comfortable and looking pulled together. (I also washed and dried it with no problems!)

Fit Tip: I’m wearing an XS

Striped Linen-blend Cardigan | Ballet Neck Tee | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals

Knit Cardigan | Ballet Neck Tee | Distressed Jeans | Flat Sandals | Striped Linen-blend Cardigan | Ballet Neck Tee | Dark Skinnies (40% off!) | Espadrilles

If you prefer pullover styles, this merino v-neck is super-soft and comes in a slew of colors. The weight is sturdy enough to not show the outline of your bra, but not too warm.

Fit Tip:I sized up to a small for a relaxed fit, but my usual size would work too.

Merino V-Neck Pullover | Distressed Jeans | Wedges | Earrings

Merino V-Neck Pullover | Distressed Jeans | Wedges | Earrings | Dark Skinnies (40% off!) | Espadrilles

My mom is always a sucker for pajamas, and she loved this cropped style for warmer months. The cotton on hers is a little thicker and less silky than my shorts set, but still really soft. Mine are more of a jersey knit.

Fit Tip: We’re both wearing XS.

Shorts Pajamas | Cropped Pajamas

And finally, we’ll finish this DRD with my favorite one-piece swimsuit. I couldn’t resist grabbing it in a second color when it went on sale, and love this ‘Brilliant Turquoise.’ It’s such a flattering and chic swimsuit, and I love it paired with shorts or a skirt for casual vacation vibes. These shorts are super soft and stretchy, and completely opaque. Also a great longer inseam…you can uncuff them for even more length. And the slides…darling, right?!

Fit Tip: I size up in the suit for more torso length and full coverage across the bum, and am wearing a 4. The jean shorts and sandals are true to size, I’m wearing 26.

Plunge-Neck Swimsuit | White Cut-Off Shorts | Striped Slides
