A Mother’s Day Tea

May 2, 2016

Mother’s Day is right up there with birthdays and Christmas on the ‘awesome holidays meter’, but is also a bit of an oxymoron for me. It’s a day intended for celebrating Moms, and all they mean to us…however, my one request each Mother’s Day is to spend the entire day not being mom. You know…someone else does the cooking, picking up, bossing kids around, and making sure everyone gets fed, bathed, and put to bed in a semi-timely manner. Oh, and feed me Mexican food. #duh

My guess is many of you have the same request…why else would every brunch spot in town be packed on Mother’s Day?! Daddy’s in charge, and doesn’t want to cook! 😉

My mom and I have always had an extremely close mother/daughter relationship, and a true friendship. The early years weren’t always easy, and even though we leaned on each other, I always knew she was the mom, and I was loved. She made countless sacrifices for me, and worked hard to provide stability in a sometimes unstable life.

The longer I’m a mom, the more I respect and appreciate all she did for me. She taught me kindness for others, joy for life, and a positive outlook towards everyone and everything. And also a love of color!

A few years ago, we started celebrating Mother’s Day a little early with a fun lunch or fancy tea, and it’s become a favorite tradition. Last weekend we gave our pinkie fingers a workout at The Chocolate Angel’s High Tea.

My mom loves to shop, so I surprised her with a Nordstrom gift card…her favorite retailer! #duh (Their e-gift cards have saved me on more than one occasion!! You can choose one of their designs, or upload your own, then select the date you want it delivered to the recipient’s inbox!!! #procrastinatorslifesaver)

You may recognize parts of her outfit, since she faithfully reads my blog every morning! #thanksmom

Little Miss is more on the tomboy side, but she loves having her Noonie and me all to herself, especially for a girly-day! She says, ‘I feel bad not inviting the boys, but it’s more fun with just us girls!’ #gulp

Hi Sugarplum | Mother's Day Tea

Mom found her top from one of my Dressing Room Diaries posts, and loved it so much she bought it in three patterns! I have it in polka dots, too! Could she be any cuter?!?!

Fit Tip: The mock-neck top runs true to size…I wear a regular XS and my mom is in a large (she’s busty, something she didn’t pass on to me). Normally she’d order a petite, but liked the longer length of a regular. (It’s available in plus-size, too.)

On Me: Palm Print Romper | Nude Wedges | Blush Bag | Sunglasses

I love a good romper, but have a hard time finding one that fits me well (it’s a long torso/big bottom thing for me). Also, some of them come across as juvenile, and even though I’m on the petite side, I still prefer to look like grown woman! #rawr This one has a kimono feel on top, with the split sleeves and keyhole-back, but a tailored fit on bottom with pockets and tie-waist.

Fit Tip: I sized up to a S for more length. #coveryourcheeksladies

Three Ways | Pink Field Jacket

April 1, 2016

Cheers to Friday! Between all the rain and standardized testing the kids had this week, we are ready for some sunshine and fun this weekend! We’ve got more birthday celebrations, soccer games, and fingers crossed, a date night! What do you have planned?

For today’s Fashion Friday, I’ve got a bright dose of Spring Style for you! I couldn’t stop thinking about this pink military jacket from the last Dressing Room Diaries post, so I finally caved when it went on sale. With temperatures still flip-flopping between warm and cool, lightweight jackets are essential…and since I wear my green military jacket constantly, I knew I’d get a ton of wear out of this one, too.

And to prove it, I’ve styled this punchy pink beauty three ways..with the help of some fun bags from Barrington’s colorful new Spring line! (Be sure to check the bottom of this post for an exclusive discount code!!!)

Hi Sugarplum | Pink Military Jacket

I knew my green military jacket went with absolutely everything, but wondered if I might be a little more limited with the pink. Turns out, the pink is just as versatile, and looks darling paired with most every outfit I created!

Fit Tip: I’m wearing a Reg XS, and it’s plenty roomy…even after drying. And fyi, mine is actually called ‘buoy red.’ I haven’t seen the fuchsia in person, but my guess is it’s more intensely pink. And use code APRFUN for 35% off!!

Style Tip: Self-tanner is my friend from now until Summer…it’s slimming and covers most of my leg imperfections. Check my tips & tricks for using self tanner here.

If you’ve been following this blog for more than a minute, you know I’m cuckoo over Barrington bags. Not only are they so colorful and stylish, but unbelievably sturdy and well-made. I’ve been carrying a striped Savannah as my everyday bag (my favorite style because of it’s size, zipper close, and endless pockets), and a striped St. Anne as a travel carry-on, for years!

The only problem with Barrington, is having to choose a color, pattern and monogram style! I honestly spent over an hour creating options, and finally decided after lots of fretting and hand-wringing. I literally gasped with excitement, and might have even clapped a little, when it arrived! This is the Savannah in sand chambray with a lilac lipstick stripe. #preppyswoon

I don’t think an outfit could scream, ‘Spring!’ louder than this second look! I used the floral boots to tie in the colors of the top and jacket, but it’d be just as cute with neutral booties or sandals. And I’ll pause while you gape at that striped bag! Cutest ever, right?!

These jeans are a few years old (hence the extra-large holes!), but I just discovered a new pair of non-distressed white jeans, and I’m obsessed!! I’ll share them next week, but just know they are nice and thick (so they aren’t see-thru and the pockets don’t show!), and have just enough stretch to hold you in. Oh, and no muffin top!

For a final look, I went with a more classic combo of crisp white top, and cognac leather sandals.

Flutter-Sleeve Top | Tassel Necklace | Favorite Dark Jeans | Lace-Up Sandals (so comfy!!)
Monogrammed Striped Crossbody | Jacket | Hat | Sunglasses | Hoop Earrings

I mentioned these lace-up sandals in this week’s Five Under $50 post, and I’ve been wearing them pretty much non-stop all week. Hard to believe they are this comfy for that low price.
Fit Tip: The sandals only come in whole-sizes, so I sized down, and they fit great.

Flutter-Sleeve Top | Tassel Necklace | Favorite Dark Jeans | Lace-Up Sandals
Monogrammed Striped Crossbody | Jacket | Hat | Sunglasses | Hoop Earrings

I never met a tassel I didn’t love, and this silk dip-dyed tassel necklace is no exception! Paired with the double-strand turquoise beads, it will make any outfit pop.

Hi Sugarplum | Pink Military Jacket
Flutter-Sleeve Top | Favorite Dark Jeans | Tassel Necklace | Monogrammed Striped Crossbody  Jacket | Hat | Sunglasses | Hoop Earrings | Watch | Bracelet | Ring

I’ve been begging my friends at Barrington to design a smaller, cross body bag for years…so when they unveiled the new Norfolk style, I raced to duplicate my favorite black and white stripe. The adjustable strap allows it to be shoulder or cross body, and has ample space for my daily necessities.

So now that I have you in a frenzy over darling new Spring bags…how about a discount to create your very own?! Just head over to Barrington, design as many bags as your heart’s content (prepare to be there awhile, it’s addicting!!), then enter Sugarplum10 in the coupon box for 10% off your total order! If you can bear to part with one, they make amazing Mother’s Day gifts, as well. I know my mom has her sights on one!!

How’s that for a bright dose of Spring inspiration!? Which is your favorite look? Would you wear a pink military jacket, or do you prefer a more neutral green or navy? Happy weekend, lovebugs!

Five Ways, Spring & Summer

{I Spy}

March 2, 2016

Happy Hump Day…we’ve made it halfway to the weekend! And really, could the week be moving any slower?! Maybe it’s just the excitement and anticipation of next week’s Spring Break, but I’m ready for Friday now!

My inbox has been flooded with end-of-season sales, which has been perfect since we’re headed to the mountains next week. I know many of you are over sweaters, scarves, and cold-weather gear, but now’s the time to grab those pieces you’ve been coveting all season. There’s still time left to wear them, not to mention, I love pulling those fairly-new pieces out when Winter rolls around again next year…and knowing I scored them for a steal!

Here are some of the super-sale pieces I’ve had my eye on…

I tried, and loved, this long cardi in a previous Dressing Room Diaries, and love it even more now that’s it’s 40% off. There are four great colors, but sizes are going quickly.

Marled Long Open-Front Cardigan

Okay, so I already have this peacoat in two colors, and have worn the heck out of them both (see here and here)! And at $28, I just had to share it again. Remember to size up!

Double-Breasted Peacoat

Another classic coat is the trench…never goes out of style, and always chic. It’s actually a great option for Spring and rainy season, too! This quality option is 33% off and has near-perfect reviews.

Belted Trench Coat
Ah, my beloved kitten-cardi…practically one of the coziest things I own, and what I reach for when comfort is key, but I still want to look stylish (see it here and here). So many great colors on sale, and this one is $20! (Sidenote: I love the fleece ones, but not so much these fuzzy fleece. There’s definitely a difference in the material and thickness.)
One-Button Fleece Wrap

This long cardi is a better option for shorter girls #me because it’s not as long as the one I showed at the top of the post. This one is already washed and ready for me to pack!

Cozy Open Cardigan

This cardi-jacket had me at fringe and color block!

Fringed Cardigan

Did someone say stripes?? Love this high-low pullover…already on sale, and now an extra 40% off!

Striped Pullover

I’ve lived in my favorite leggings all season (see them here and here), so I’m always on the look-out for tops and sweaters long enough to cover the lady bits.

Dolman Sleeve Sweater

There’s no question I have a particular look and style I always seem to gravitate towards, but I’ve recently started broadening that scope for the Dressing Room Diaries posts I do for you…and that’s how I discovered how much I like these layered-look sweaters! And this one is 75% off with free shipping!! #saywhat?

Layered Look Sweater

They may consider this shirt end-of-season, but I’m here to tell you you’ll wear the heck out of it all Spring and early Summer!

Chambray Popover Boyfriend Shirt

Same is true for this drapey cardigan…it’s very thin and a great layer over tanks and tees in the getting-warmer months. It just so happens to be up to 60% off now!?

Long Cardigan

You may recall I was on the parka-hunt…for both the coldest weekend in NYC history (maybe a slight exaggeration, but didn’t feel like it to this Texan!!), and next week’s ski trip. These were my favorites, and it didn’t hurt they are all deeply discounted.

Waterproof Down Jacket
Down Parka with Faux Fur Trim

This is the one I went with, and could not be happier!! I was toasty warm and dry, the fur hood was perfect for blocking the wind, and the storm cuffs kept my sleeves from ever creeping up. It’s also got enough shape to keep me from looking like the Abominable Snowman. (See it on me here.)

Short Quilted Parka with Faux Fur Trim
My go-to brand of activewear has a ton of great pieces on sale, and this one will be my base layer for skiing and other activities that require I be outdoors.
Full-Zip Jacket

I was recently introduced to this brand of rain boots, and I’m completely smitten!! The price point is significantly better than Hunter, but they are also far more comfortable! Especially for walking all day…they have a lot of sole and traction, and aren’t as heavy. And don’t get me started on the patterns!

Dog-Print Wellie Boots

So let’s move on to some great clearance-priced boots…

Stretch Back Riding Boots

UGG Cardi Classic Knit Boot (30% off!!)

Suede Bootie

And who am I kidding….I can’t spend any time online without seeing all the fun New Arrivals…and these caught my eye for Spring.

Split-Back Tunic Tank
Cotton Peasant Top
Long Jersey Tank

And finally, I fell in love with flowy maxi dresses last year during our cruise (see one here), but had so few to choose from because most were just too long for me. Well no longer…because tons of them are now available in Petite sizing! These are my faves so far.

Belted Print Chiffon Maxi Dress
Scarf Print Maxi Dress
Graphic Crepe Maxi Dress

So pretty, right?? I’ve also been scouting sales for the kids and found this great fleece hoodie for Little Miss that’s 40% off, and water resistant (non-puffy!) jackets for our boy. What have you spied lately? I’d love to hear what you’ve got your eye on! Do you like shopping end-of-season sales, or have you moved on to Spring?

Sugarplum Style, Vol. 23

February 5, 2016

Cheers to Friday! It’s been a fun, productive week, but I’m ready for the slower pace of the weekend. Between all the stops for tacos, Jen and I have been busy-bees on the Office/Craft Closet, and hopefully I’ll have pics for you next week. I can’t believe how dreamy a closet of paint and scissors can be!

Sidenote: The big Elfa sale ends soon (Feb 15, I think), so don’t miss it if you’ve been planning organizing projects of your own!

Today it’s time for another Sugarplum Style…snapshots of my everyday outfits, created by mixing-and-matching items in my closet. And thanks to our sporadic weather, it’s a mixed bag of layers.

This peacoat and leopard scarf are on constant repeat around here…it’s just so easy, and make virtually anything look good! In fact, you’d never know I’m wearing my pajama top! 😉

Fit Tip: Size up one on the peacoat…and hurry while it’s still only $28! More sizes are stocked, too!

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Peacoat | Leopard Scarf | Jeans | Sweater | Boots | Crossbody Bag

I’ve always planned my work outfits the night before, but I’ve started making Monday’s a little brighter and more fun…it’s kind of helped take the sting out of Sunday night.

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Sweater (similar) | Pants | Leopard Heels | Necklace | Earrings

This was actually a Dressing Room Diaries shot I shared on Instagram, but am such a bozo I forgot to link the sweaters! #doh Both were insanely soft and wanted to come home with me.

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Striped Cardigan | Colorblock Tunic Sweater | Favorite Leggings
Boots | Plaid Bag

When it comes to pullover sweaters, I tend to gravitate to the lightweight ones…not just because I seem to be overheating more these days, but because it allows me to add extra layers for more style! This one has a hood, which I think is even cuter with a collared shirt or turtleneck underneath.

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Hoodie Pullover (similar) | Striped Tee | Jeans | Rainboots

Nothing dresses up plaid quicker than pearls and leopard.

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Similar Plaid Shirt | Herringbone Vest | Black Jeans | Leopard Heels

This was another of those Sunday night outfit planning sessions…obviously pink makes me happiest. So does this tunic! Although, I think my mom is even more obsessed than me…she keeps adding more to her collection, and blames me everytime the one she wants isn’t available. Listen woman, I can only lead you to the tunic…the rest is between you and Nordstrom! 😉

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Cowlneck Tunic (striped version on sale!) | Jeans | Booties | Horn Pendant | Agate Bracelet

This soft and lightweight sweater has been my obsession this season, considering I’ve worn it nonstop and picked up another color! I’ll share it next week in a fun Valentine outfit.

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Relaxed Turtleneck | Jeans | Boots | Crossbody Bag | Necklace

Oh look, here’s the hoodie pullover again…layered with a collared shirt. So cute with the pattern peeking out the top, right?!

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Hoodie Pullover (similar) | Similar Plaid Shirt | Distressed Jeans

We’ve gone from frigid, to warm, and back to frigid again…this was one of the warmer days. I used my Transitioning to Fall formula to get dressed!
Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Striped Tee (similar) | Plaid Scarf | Jeans | Booties | Crossbody Bag

Striped Monogram Bag | Pearl Cluster Necklace | Watch
Mr. SP and I are headed on a little weekend getaway soon, and we’ve got a fun dinner event to attend. I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to try something outside my normal style, and put this plaid maxi skirt up for a vote on Instagram and Facebook. And wowza were there a lot of opinions!! I love them…and this outfit. However, it’s not a winner for the event. Stay tuned for more options. I’ve actually been browsing Rent the Runway…have you ever tried it???

Hi Sugarplum | Sugarplum Style
Plaid Skirt | Favorite Oxford Shirt | Black Mock Turtle Top

I hope these posts inspire you to create new combinations from your closet! The key isn’t to have more clothes, but to mix up what you do have in new and different ways. Except these leggings and this coat, you need those. #trustme #enabler

You can catch up with past installments of Sugarplum Style here, or follow my everyday-style outfits on InstaGram. Make sure you’re following my Facebook page, too…that’s where I post deals, steals, sales and goodies! Happy weekend, lovebugs!
