{Family Room} The Reveal

March 23, 2015

Are you guys whiplashed by the back and forth between our old house and the new?! I know I am, but we worked so hard completing all those room makeovers for the photo shoot, so I want to be sure and share them with you…and have them here for our own sentiment (see them all on the updated Home Tour!).

This is last major room reveal of our previous home, so now I can officially stop referring to our new house as, well, the new house. It will just be our house. Then I promise to start showing you more of it.

The Family Room was the trickiest to configure with all the doorways, pass-thrus, windows and fireplace, and of course it took us until last year to figure it out completely. It was our favorite spot in the house, and definitely lived up to it’s label of ‘Family Room.’

There are so many new projects in this room that I’ll share with you in the coming years months weeks….starting with the DIY Ottoman we made to serve as a coffee table. The previous table was too big for the space, and after Mr. SP nailed his knee on it for the 87th time, he agreed to help me with the project. #winwin

Since we ditched the traditional coffee table, we built a simple console table behind the sectional for a place to set remotes, books, and drinks…it was also great to be able to add a light in the corner for reading. Since it was DIY, we were able to customize it for the 110-inch couch…and less than $50!

The console table moved the sectional forward a foot, making the photo wall off-center. Instead of re-hanging them, we just added another row using pictures from our Italy and Puerto Rico trips. I can’t wait to hang this in the new house…I think I have just the spot.

Yep…the snakeskin table is another DIY…I told you we were crazy busy!

It was an easy project, as well, and completely transformed the old Pottery Barn side table we’ve owned for almost 20 years! I kept a basket on the bottom with a bin for DVDs (see how I keep them organized here), and another for remotes.

The desk nook got an upgrade with new fabric, and I finally found the perfect chair.

Do you remember how awful this corner was before when it was a wet bar??? It was so 80s (“how 80s was it?!”) it sang She’s My Cherry Pie, while rocking a mullet and parachute pants. Hard to believe a sink lived here with an opening to the Living Room.

The greek key rug used to live in the Dining Room, but this was a much better fit. And like the white walls of the Living Room, the soft grays on the walls and floor provided the perfect canvas for all the colorful accents, while still keeping the room cozy.

Miss Maggie’s special spot was under the desk…I loved hearing her snore when I worked late at night.

Seeing this space makes me a little sad…and anxious. As much as I love the new house, I miss the comfort of knowing where everything is, and having it exactly as you like it…and I’m a little overwhelmed with how much there is to do in order to find that comfort zone again. Not to mention, how long that’s going to take us to get there! #deepbreaths

But with every weekend, we make a little more progress, and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Thank you for your kind support and contageous enthusiasm…it totally encourages and motivates me!! xoxoxo

Eenie Meenie Miney Rug

January 20, 2015

Thank you for the congrats on selling our house…there’s no doubt luck was on our side with this one! As cliche as it is, from the very beginning we’ve had the sense that this whole move was meant to be. Too many times I’ve let desires cloud my judgement, and ended up trying to shove a square peg in a round hole…it feels good to know the peg was round this time.

But there’s no packing going on yet…first up is the big photo shoot happening next week!! Not only have we been prepping our house for listing (see my tips here), but at the same time we were scrambling to complete the room makeovers for the magazines. I’ve got a lot to show you in the coming weeks…projects and updates for both houses, so it will be a little ADD around here!

Ever since painting the Dining Room pink and red, the gray rug no longer seemed to work in the space. But I wasn’t going to ditch a perfectly good rug just because it looked so-so in the room. But as luck would have it, the Family Room needed a rug, and the gray one from the Dining Room worked perfectly (I’ll show you soon)! Musical rugs saves the day. And oh darn, that left the Dining Room without a rug!

I went straight to my favorite rug source…Rugs USA…and started sorting through the options. I couldn’t decide if I wanted something to balance out the ceiling, coordinate with the walls, or tie in with the drapes. Fortunately I have an uber-talented friend, and she whipped together mock-ups showing my top five rug choices. Everyone should have an uber-talented friend, because as soon as she texted me these screen shots, I knew the clear winner. And it wasn’t my top choice originally!

So which rug do you choose for the room? And which rug do you think I chose?

1. Pink
2. Pink & Chartreuse
3. Navy
4. Navy Geometric
5. Navy Stripes
P.S. Rugs USA is having one of their crazy sales right now…so hop over if you’re in the market!

P.P.S. I get a lot of questions on my #SugarplumStyle posts on InstaGram and Facebook, and sometimes I don’t see them all!! I hate when I miss them, but did you know you can Shop My Feed directly from my sidebar? I always try to link the exact item I’m wearing, or something really similar. xo. c

Sugarplum Christmas

December 9, 2014

Hello friends, and welcome to Christmas in our home! I’m thrilled to be taking part in the Holiday Home Tour blog hop, hosted by my dear friend, Chris. If you’re coming over from Emily’s, at 11 Gables, then welcome to our colorful house! We’ve had our decor up for a few weeks, so we’re in a full blown Christmas frenzy now….we’re talking Griswald proportions! Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m prone to it.
I’ll let the overload of photos do most of the talking…so pour yourself some cocoa, spike it if you can, and poke around our house…I promise I won’t report you as a stalker.

Next to the ornaments my kids have made through the years, my favorite things to unpack each Christmas are the nativity scenes…we have about 10 scattered around the house…each holding different memories.

Some serve as bookends and table top decor…I love seeing my daughter playing with this one, using her little voice as Mary and Joseph! When she was little, she used to walk around with Baby Jesus clutched in her chubby hand, and showering him with kisses. Can you even stand the cuteness?!

Hi Sugarplum | Christmas Home Tour 2014

In an effort to simplify this season, I only unpacked about half of our decor. It’s amazing how such small touches like bowls of ornaments make the whole place so festive, with so little effort.

We have a double-mantel, so the family stockings hang in the Family Room…aka, the room where football plays all weekend long. I was guilty this time since my Frogs were on…go ahead and check that score! But don’t get me started, I’m still ticked about the playoff announcement. #wewererobbed 😉

But enough about football…and the rest of the house for that matter….we know it’s all about the tree! I loved last year’s ombre tree so much, we created it again. But this time, it’s accented with black and white stripes. Because, duh, they’re black and white stripes.

{DIY} Book Caddy

November 3, 2014

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you had a fabulous weekend, and you’ve recovered from the Halloween sugar-high. After chasing after little girls all evening, we pretty much laid low the rest of the weekend. Sometimes we all need a little couch time!

Today I have a simple project we just added to Babygirl’s room to help control the book population. She’s recently graduated to chapter books, and has become obsessed with reading! Obviously, I’m thrilled, and want to do everything I can to encourage her.

When we created her Big Girl Room, we carved out a secret reading nook, but her book collection quickly outgrew the small storage. I looked around online, and fell in love with this Land of Nod book caddy…but not the $150 price tag! Plus, it’s a little large for her small room. So I made my own, duh!

Hi Sugarplum | DIY Book Caddy

This simple project took about 10-minutes and cost $20…and it’s already become a game-changer for keeping her room better organized. I’m thinking of making another caddy to hold magazines and remotes in our family room.

Hi Sugarplum | DIY Book Caddy

We currently keep the book caddy near her art center (which I cleaned up for pictures, don’t be fooled into thinking she’s this tidy!), so it’s a whole corner of imagination and creativity!

Hi Sugarplum | DIY Book Caddy

Check out all the details of this project, including the simple supply list, in my contributor post on Jen’s gorgeous blog, I Heart Organizing! How do you corral the ever-growing pile of books? Have you started to dread the school Book Fairs, too?!
